This Day in History
March 20, 1854: The Republican Party was founded.
Former members of the Whig Party met in Ripon, Wisconsin, to establish a new party committed to opposing the spread of slavery into America’s western territories. The disintegration of the Whigs following the dissolution of the Missouri Compromise created an opening for a new political faction to lead the anti-slavery movement, and the new Republicans quickly filled it. The GOP’s first presidential candidate, Senator John Frémont, won 11 of the 16 Northern states in 1856, and Abraham Lincoln became the party’s first member to claim the White House four years later.

Tomorrow night, Monday, May 19th, at 8:00 PM at City Hall, the Marlborough City Council will consider the mayor’s proposed FY 2026 budget. This is the only public hearing on the city budget.
This $215 million dollar budget represents a 9.91% increase, $19.4 Million dollars.
That’s an estimated average tax increase of $700.
$27,500,000 in new spending in two years.
This is unsustainable. That’s not $700 this year, it’s $700 every year thereafter.
Make your voice hear. 8:00 PM, City Hall, second floor council chambers, (top of the stairs, door on the left).
Can’t go? Email your city councilor: [email protected]
You can also call the City Council Office & leave a message: 508-460-3711
Make you voice heard, you can make a difference.
