Join us Wednesday October 28, from 5pm-6pm to learn all about spiders in Michigan! Normally they get a bad rep, but Dr. Carmen Greenwood, is here to put any and all misconceptions to rest. While teaching students of entomology throughout her career, Dr. Greenwood noticed many of them misunderstood arachnids. Having worked with many kinds of arachnids throughout her graduate studies, Dr. Greenwood decided to dedicate a class each semester to learning all about arachnids. We hope to see you there so we can make these helpful critters a little less scary!

This Saturday, 10/17 there is a great volunteer and educational opportunity with the KI Sawyer Sustainable Food Forest project! Volunteers will learn all about hugelkultur, the practice of building mounded raised beds with layers of wood, organic materials like branches, leaves and small twigs! There will also be the opportunity to get your hands dirty and build some of these beds at the KISS Food Forest site! The event goes from 10AM-6PM, and you can stop by for any amount of time that you are available.

We are still looking for some large hardwood logs and woodchips for the project! If this is something you can help with, please reach out to Jordan at [email protected]!

This educational event with over 330 students and 60 volunteers would not be possible without support from our generous sponsors. MCCD and ACD would like to thank these local businesses that donated to and/or sponsored this year’s Agripalooza! Their contributions added to the success of this day, and we are truly grateful!

If you think youth education is important, here is a list of local businesses that do too!

A huge thank you to all who came out to support our Fall Wildflower sale!! While a bit windy, it was a beautiful day to see so many community members excited to pick up and plant so many different native plants. We also owe a massive thank you to Michelle at UP Native Plants for her expertise, as well as her beautiful selection of native plants.

Did you know that fall is actually one of the best times to plant native? Since most of our native plants here in Michigan are perennials, planting native in the fall allows young plants to establish strong roots before the ground freezes. A little work now means a huge payout next spring! Plus, natural stressors like pests and water availability are less of a problem in the fall. Most pests are less active, and cooler temperatures mean less evaporation from the soil.

If you missed our sale this fall, never fear! We will be back in the spring with more wonderful native plants to offer. If you have gotten plants from us in the past, let us know how they are doing! We love to see people's native plantings and the progress they make throughout the years. Happy fall!!
