During Michigan’s first PFAS Awareness Week, we’re highlighting what PFAS investigation and restoration look like in Marquette County, and the former K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base is one site where this work is ongoing.

The Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) allows community members to learn about cleanup efforts, ask questions, and engage in the process.

After the legalization of recreational adult-use ma*****na in Michigan in 2018, the adult-use ma*****na tax has become a significant source of revenue for local governments. In 2026, Marquette County received $702,222.30 from Michigan’s FY 2025 adult-use ma*****na tax distribution.

Funds collected are distributed with 15% to municipalities and Indian tribes, 15% to Counties and Indian tribes, 35% to the School Aid Fund for K-12 education, and 35% to the Michigan Transportation Fund for road and bridge repair/maintenance.

The recently approved State of Michigan budget added a “Pot for Potholes” tax: a 24% wholesale ma*****na tax, with revenue dedicated to road repairs.

The Essential Air Service (EAS) program was created by Congress in 1978 to ensure that smaller communities would retain a link to the National Air Transportation System, with Federal subsidy when necessary. The U.S. Department of Transportation subsidizes air carriers serving 5 of the 6 commercial airports in the U.P.

Marquette Sawyer is the only non-EAS airport in the U.P.
