💊DEA National Drug Take Back at Walgreens this weekend💊
Prescription medication that has expired or is no longer needed can be a public safety issue, even a gateway to addiction.
The majority of opioid addictions start with prescription pills found in medicine cabinets at home. Pharmaceutical drugs can be just as dangerous as street drugs when taken without a prescription or a doctor’s supervision. A majority of people who misuse a prescription medication obtained the medicine from a family member or friend.
DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day events offer an opportunity to dispose of unneeded medications. Our community's event will be at Walgreens, 309 East End Blvd. North, on Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Marshall Police officers will be in the parking area to accept unwanted medications for safe disposal.
This voluntary and anonymous program offers several benefits:
• Limits access to addictive medications, helping to prevent accidental or intentional misuse and overdoses, especially by youth.
• Reduces water pollution caused by flushing medications down drains or disposing of them in landfills.
• Helps curb illegal narcotic sales in East Texas.
• Decreases the need for law enforcement to respond to burglaries and thefts related to prescription drugs.
If you miss Saturday's event, you can always dispose of unused or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications at the green drop box in the lobby of the Marshall Police Department, open 24/7, year-round.
The Marshall Police Department demonstrates its dedication to community safety by hosting events like Drug Take Back Day and providing a secure medication drop box that is accessible year-round.
