Marshall Area Fire Fighters Ambulance Authority Dial 911 for an emergency! DO NOT post emergencies on this page, DIAL 911

Ever wonder why an ambulance might load a patient, close the doors… and then just sit there for a few minutes before leaving?

Chances are, we’re not just sitting there.

Once a patient is in the back of the ambulance, we have a lot of tools and equipment right at our fingertips. Cardiac monitors, medications, IV supplies, airway equipment, and plenty more. Depending on the ambulance service, there may even be advanced equipment like ultrasound available.

Before we start heading to the hospital, there are times when we need a few extra minutes to assess the patient, check vital signs, run an EKG, start an IV, give medications, or perform other treatments.

We’re also trying to answer an important question:

Where is the best place for this patient to go?

Not every hospital provides the same level of care for every emergency. One hospital may be the best destination for a stroke patient, while another may be better equipped for a major trauma or certain cardiac emergencies.

What we find during our assessment can completely change the destination.

Could we do some of this while driving?

Absolutely.

But some things are a whole lot easier β€” and safer β€” to do while the ambulance is sitting still instead of bouncing down the road. πŸ˜‚

So the next time you see an ambulance sitting in front of a house for a few minutes after the patient has already been loaded, don’t assume nothing is happening.

There’s a pretty good chance the crew is actively assessing, treating, and deciding on the best plan for that patient before the wheels ever start moving.

We’re not wasting time. We’re using it.

What’s something you’ve always wondered about what happens inside an ambulance?

Our prayers go out to the family of the Paramedic killed yesterday in Cleveland County when the ambulance she was working in while attending to a cardiac patient was rear ended by another vehicle. Paramedic Moore lost her life after being ejected from the vehicle after the impact caused the driver to lose control and roll over on the highway. This senseless, tragic incident brings light once again to the fact that far too many drivers are not being responsible operators of a motor vehicles.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE...stay off your cell phones while driving unless you have the hands free option. If you see emergency vehicles, road maintenance vehicles, or just other driver's who may be broken down, as was the horrific situation with the family recently killed near Detroit last week, MOVE TO THE LANE FARTHEST FROM THE SITUATION.

This is a selfless career. All those who work in EMS want to do is provide care to strangers in need and then return home to their families & the ones that they love after their shift. It is selfish not to give workers who put their lives on the line every shift for you not to be attentive as a driver and MOVE OVER. As a matter of fact...IT IS THE LAW!

Rest in Peace Paramedic Moore. Your watch is over far too soon. Godspeed.

Our hearts are with the members of Cleveland County EMS as they mourn the loss of one of their own. We extend our deepest condolences to their family, friends, and coworkers during this incredibly difficult time.

Yesterday also served as a sobering reminder of the risks first responders face every day, as ambulance crashes involving Cleveland County EMS and Davidson County EMS occurred while crews were serving their communities.

When you see emergency vehicles responding, please slow down, stay alert, and give them the space they need to do their jobs safely. As temperatures rise, remember that impatience and distracted driving can have lasting consequences. A few extra seconds of caution can save livesβ€”including those who have dedicated theirs to protecting yours.

Please keep all of our first responders in your thoughts, and help us make this a safe summer for everyone.
