Some days we hand out band-aids. Other days it something more intense. Tonight!?! CANDY!!! The MCEMS crew stationed in Monrovia got a chance to pass out some candy with a familiar member of the fire department!!

We’re continually thankful for the partnerships we have with every public safety agency throughout Morgan County.

Another round of celebrating, but we’ll never get tired of it!!🎉🎉

Pictured today are David (Paramedic) and Steve (IU EMS liaison). The IU Health trauma team randomly selected Dave for the “bone pin” regarding Dave’s administration of pre-hospital antibiotics! Our providers are tasked with a lot during a traumatic injury. One of our tasks is actually to administer an antibiotic to someone who has an open fracture or an amputation. This early medication administration has been shown in studies to reduce relative infection rates by over half!!

Way to go Dave! Side note, yes…Dave is that tall!

More celebrating from us!!!🎉🎉

You might recognize the face on the left as Cody! We featured him awhile ago as one of our newest employees. Well, he’s here again with his partner Ethan and EDO-B Terry. This time we’re celebrating another ROSC save. Cody, Ethan and Terry were all part of saving a patient who suffered sudden cardiac arrest. This particular patient ended up walking out of the hospital without neurological deficits. Which is truly amazing!

Oh….we forgot to mention that this was Cody’s very first time working a cardiac arrest and he was part of a crew that had a save!

We’re proud of these three and all of our MCEMS clinicians who work hard everyday to save lives!!!

🎉🎉Big News🎉🎉 Back in August, we began a major transition to IU Health Rural EMS protocols and this transition brought a new provider into the MCEMS family. Morgan County EMS would finally like to introduce Dr. Ostahowski!!!

What does changing medical direction mean for our providers? It means our providers have access to the IU Health network of training and providers. Also, being affiliated with an organization that has the highest level of trauma hospital is second to none. Our providers now have a few more tools in their belts from medications to procedures to the all important “phone a friend” of contacting medical direction directly.

What does changing medical direction mean for the public? Fundamentally, nothing. We’ll still respond every time you need us. Every day. Every hour. Our brains just got a little bigger with the extra protocols and knowledge!

Dr. O and some of her EMS Fellows spent the last several days checking off our ALS providers on drug assisted airways. At its most basic and simplest, that’s when we care for an extremely ill patient, put them to sleep and put in a breathing tube. It’s stressful for everyone involved and having our medical director answering questions is unbelievably helpful.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Ostahowski to the organization!!!!

👋🏼So, National MIH week just finished and we wanted to take a moment and recognize (along with the Governor!) our MCEMS Mobile Integrated Health providers. The team we have is hands down, some of the hardest working, compassionate and fantastic providers out there working everyday (we’re bias, but we don’t care)!

For those of you unaware, Morgan County EMS has a mobile integrated health program. These providers work with our residents on countless aspects of their lives to ease the burden on patients and families navigating the healthcare system as well as the 911 system. If you’re visited by one of our EMS clinicians, you may be given information or asked for your contact info so MIH can follow up and offer assistance.

If we can tackle these providers between home visits and all the other work that keeps them going in the next few days, we’ll get introductions and more information out! But in the meantime, they have a massive amount of gratitude coming from their partners on the ambulances!!

Last week, some of your providers were given the privilege of attending EMS World Expo. This event is held once a year by the National Association of EMTs. It brings together thousands of EMS Clinicians from all over the world. MCEMS providers participated in classes with members from Hawaii, Norway, and South Korea to name a few far off places. Not only did they receive specialized training in the first few days, but they received continuing education throughout the week. They also had to ability to partake in conversations with industry leading manufacturers and network with other clinicians on best practices for EMS. They’re bringing these lessons learned back to our department with future in service trainings to spread the knowledge throughout our service. These opportunities are invaluable to the growth of our department.
