Economic Development Looks a Little Different from an ATV! 🌾☀️

What a great day exploring another side of Marshall County!

A huge thank you to Dr. Randy Brown for being my chauffeur on the Blue River Trail ATV ride today and, more importantly, for sharing so much knowledge about the history of the trail today.

One of the highlights was stopping in Marietta, an unincorporated community in Marshall County, where we had the opportunity to see firsthand how agriculture, industry, and recreation can share the same space.

Our rural communities truly offer something special. Agriculture and local industry are essential economic drivers, while recreational opportunities like the Blue River Trail add another dimension to what makes Marshall County a great place to live, work, and explore.

When recreation, agriculture, and industry coexist, we create opportunities for tourism, local spending, community connections, and long-term economic vitality.

And sometimes the best way to understand the communities you’re working to grow is to get out of the office, ride the trails, ask questions, and listen to the people who know them best.

Thank you again, Randy, for the education, conversation, and adventure today!

There’s so much to discover right here in Marshall County, Kansas! 💚

🌾Frankfort, Kansas! 🌾

Did you know that some of the biggest economic engines in Marshall County aren’t found in office buildings? They’re growing right in our fields! 🚜

Today we’re highlighting Frankfort, Kansas, where agriculture, small businesses, and community pride all play an important role in our local economy.

🌱 Here’s a little economics lesson: Agriculture creates what economists call a multiplier effect.

When a local farmer sells a crop, the economic impact doesn’t necessarily stop at the field. Those dollars can help support equipment dealers, transportation companies, local businesses, and jobs throughout our communities.

And economic development isn’t just about bringing in new businesses. It’s also about supporting the industries already here, strengthening our downtowns, encouraging entrepreneurship, and creating opportunities for the next generation.

That’s what makes communities like Frankfort so important to Marshall County’s economic future.

Small towns. Big economic impact. Endless opportunities for growth. 💚

📍Around Marshall County: Waterville, Kansas!

What does economic development actually look like?

Sometimes, it looks like a manufacturing facility producing products that travel well beyond our county lines. Sometimes, it’s a local business creating jobs, supporting families, and contributing to the local economy. And sometimes, it’s a historic downtown building being preserved and given an opportunity for new life.

Today, I’m highlighting a few examples from Waterville!

🏭 Titan Trailer Manufacturing and Travalong remind us of the importance of manufacturing in rural Kansas. Businesses like these support employment, generate economic activity, and connect our communities to markets beyond Marshall County.

🏛️ Waterville’s historic downtown reminds us that economic development also includes revitalization, preservation, and finding new opportunities within the buildings and infrastructure we already have.

So, where does an economic developer fit into all of this?

At Partnership for Growth (P4G), our role is to build relationships, understand business needs, connect people with resources, identify opportunities for investment, and help remove barriers to growth.

That means supporting existing businesses just as intentionally as we work to attract new ones.

Every community in Marshall County has its own strengths, challenges, and opportunities. My goal is to be present in those communities, listen, learn, and help connect the pieces that move us forward.

Economic development doesn’t happen in just one building, one business, or one town. It happens when we work together to strengthen the entire county.

And Waterville is another great reminder of why that work matters!

Hi, Marshall County! I’m Courtney Brummer, the new Executive Director of Marshall County Partnership 4 Growth (P4G). 👋

As I transition into this role, I want to help our communities understand what economic developers do, why this work matters, and how P4G serves Marshall County as a whole.

And what better backdrop for this introduction than the Blue Rapids mural!

P4G’s work reaches across our county: Axtell, Beattie, Blue Rapids, Frankfort, Marysville, Oketo, Summerfield, Vermillion, Waterville, and the rural areas and unincorporated communities that connect us. Each has its own strengths, needs, and possibilities.

I’m committed to being present throughout the county. I will be doing this by visiting businesses, meeting community leaders, listening to residents, and following up. Understanding what matters to each community starts with showing up and building relationships.

So, what does economic growth actually look like? ☕🏘️

It can look like a new coffee shop, more housing developments, a renovated downtown building, or more childcare openings, and each can open the door to something more. These are not separate, but connected in so many ways.

A coffee shop can create jobs, purchase from local suppliers, and give people another reason to stop downtown. Renovating an empty building can create space for a business or housing while bringing activity back to a block. More childcare openings can help parents enter the workforce and employers fill positions.

Growth also happens when a longtime business expands, an entrepreneur turns an idea into a storefront, or a family finds a home that allows them to live and work here. Supporting the businesses and people already here is essential to building our future.

Where does P4G fit in?

P4G is a nonprofit 501(c)(6) membership organization. Our mission is to link, leverage, educate, and encourage our partners to promote economic growth throughout Marshall County.

Our role is to help connect the pieces. For me, that means intentionally listening, identifying barriers, researching opportunities, and bringing people and resources together. For example, that could mean:

• Connecting a business owner with financing or technical assistance.
• Helping a prospective business explore available properties and local resources.
• Bringing employers and community leaders together around housing or childcare needs.
• Building relationships that position Marshall County for future investment.

Economic developers help sustain these efforts over time. Just a window into the work that happens before a ribbon cutting includes, researching, preparing, coordinating, solving problems, and following through so an opportunity has a better chance of becoming reality.

How does this happen? One way is through both corporate and private memberships. What does a P4G membership mean?

Membership is an investment in this ongoing development work. Dues help support the coordination, research, outreach, and relationship-building needed to pursue opportunities. Members also contribute local knowledge, ideas, and connections that help inform our priorities.

Our communities have distinct identities, and our futures are connected. A new opportunity in one community can benefit workers, families, and businesses across the county.

I look forward to getting to know you, learning what is already working, and exploring what we can accomplish together.

Have an idea, a business need, or an interest in membership? Let’s connect!
