Smelling smoke in the air right now doesn't automatically mean it's time to hit the panic button-or dial 911.

It's that time of year when folks are clearing out leaves, burning branches, and firing up the bonfire for a cozy gathering with friends and family. Believe it or not, it's completely legal. If the smoke isn't thick and black, and you don't actually see an uncontrolled flame, there is a very good chance your neighbor is just enjoying the season.

We know not everyone loves the smell of a campfire blowing across their property line, but an annoying neighbor isn't a fire emergency. Please save those 911 calls for actual, uncontrolled fires so our crews can stay ready for the real deal.

Planning your own burn?
If you are burning yard debris, you do need to secure a burn permit from the Department of Forestry first. It's easy-just call 877-350-BURN (2876) or get one online at burnsafetn.org.

Keep it safe, keep it contained, and enjoy the fall weather!

FIRE PREVENTION MONTH – WEEK 3: COOKING SAFETY!

Did you know that cooking is one of the leading causes of home fires? A few simple habits in the kitchen can help keep you and your family safe!

Here are this week’s fire safety reminders from Blount County Fire Protection District:

Stay in the kitchen! Never leave cooking food unattended, especially when frying, grilling, or broiling.

Keep things clear! Keep towels, paper products, oven mitts, and anything that can burn away from the stovetop.

Turn pot handles inward. This helps prevent accidental spills and burns, especially around little ones.

Keep kids and pets back. Create a safe zone of at least 3 feet around the stove and other hot cooking areas.

Be careful with grease fires! Never throw water on a grease fire. If it’s small and safe to do so, slide a lid over the pan, turn off the heat, and leave it covered until cool. If the fire grows or you feel unsafe, get out and call 911.

Keep a close eye on what’s cooking. If you need to step away, turn off the burner.

This Fire Prevention Month, let’s make fire safety part of our everyday routine. A few seconds of prevention can make a lifetime of difference!

Help us spread the word! Share this post with your family, friends, and neighbors.

1st Annual Blount Fire Family Fun Firehouse Festivities!

What a great night bringing our Blount Fire family together for an evening of fun, laughter, and making memories!

As firefighters, we spend a lot of time away from home serving our community. Between long shifts, calls, training, and everything else that comes with the job, we don’t always get as much time with our own families as we would like. That’s what made this night so special. It was a chance to slow down, enjoy each other’s company, and spend some much-needed time with the people who support us behind the scenes.

Our families are a huge part of what makes this job possible, and we’re thankful for every opportunity to bring everyone together. Nights like this remind us that while we may serve as a fire department, we’re also one big family!

A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who helped plan, organize, and put together the 1st Annual Blount Fire Family Fun Firehouse Festivities. Your time and effort made this night possible, and we appreciate everything you did to make it a success!

Here’s to making this an annual tradition and creating many more memories together!

Fire Prevention Month week 2 is about outside fire safety.

The weather is cooling off, and that means many of us are heading outside to clean up the yard, burn leaves, or get rid of that brush pile we’ve been meaning to take care of all summer! 🍂

Before you strike that match, let’s talk about burning safely!

Starting October 15 through May 15, a burn permit is required for applicable debris burning in Tennessee. These permits are issued by the Tennessee Division of Forestry, not Blount County Fire Protection District. Get your permit online at BurnSafeTN.org before you burn!

A few outdoor fire safety reminders:
✅ Never burn on windy days or when conditions are dry.
✅ Only burn permitted natural debris—never trash or plastics.
✅ Keep water and tools nearby.
✅ Never leave a fire unattended.
✅ Make sure your fire is completely extinguished before walking away.
✅ Check local rules and restrictions before burning and give us a call so we know you’re burning safely.

A small fire can become a big problem in a hurry. Take a few extra minutes to prepare, burn responsibly, and help protect your home, your neighbors, and our community.

Burn safe. Prevent wildfires.

Did you know? The federal holiday we observe today has a complex and evolving history. It began as localized celebrations in the 1790s and gained national recognition in 1892 following efforts to combat anti-Italian sentiment. It officially became an annual national holiday in 1937, and was later moved to the second Monday of October in 1971. Today, the day holds different meanings across the country, with many communities choosing to observe Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples' Day, or Italian-American Heritage and Culture Day.

However you and your family choose to observe or reflect today, we want to keep you updated on our operations:

🏢 Our administrative offices are CLOSED today in observance of the federal holiday.

🚒 Our firefighters are ON DUTY. Our stations are fully staffed, and our crews remain ready to respond to any emergency, 24/7.

Have a safe and healthy Monday, Blount County! As always, if you need us, we are here.

Please be careful and be aware of the amount of scammers out there. Please share so we can all be safe.

🚒🔥 FIRE PREVENTION MONTH – WEEK 1: CHECK YOUR ALARMS! 🔥🚒

This week, Blount County Fire Protection District is kicking off Fire Prevention Month by focusing on something small that can make a BIG difference: smoke alarms and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms!

🏠 A few minutes today could save your life tomorrow!

🔴 Smoke Alarms

* Test your alarms monthly.
* Replace batteries when needed.
* Replace smoke alarms according to the manufacturer’s instructions, generally every 10 years.
* Make sure you have smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of your home.

⚠️ Carbon Monoxide Alarms

* Install CO alarms outside sleeping areas and on every level of your home, following the manufacturer’s instructions and local requirements.
* Remember, carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that can be deadly.
* Never ignore a CO alarm. Get everyone outside into fresh air and call 911 from a safe location.

❤️ NEED AN ALARM? WE WANT TO HELP!

If you or someone you know needs a smoke alarm or carbon monoxide alarm, please reach out to Blount County Fire Protection District. Help us spread the word so we can reach the people who need it!
