Twelve-year-old Twins Chase and Noah Raneo like to stay active. They like law enforcement and firefighters. And they really like K9s.
Their combination of preferences makes them perfect participants in our Public Safety Explorers Program, which introduces 10 to 14-year-olds to careers in public safety. These twins enjoy the program so much, theyโve each done it four times.
โAnd theyโll probably do it again,โ said their mother, Gina Raneo, of Falmouth.
Students in the Public Safety Explorers Program get tours of the Barnstable Police Department, the Hyannis Fire Department, Mass State Police Barracks, and the Sheriffโs Officeโs Emergency Communications Center. They learn crime scene investigation techniques, financial literacy, and public speaking. Communicating with confidence and clarity are essential public safety skills.
The Sheriffโs Office offers this free youth program during February and April school vacations and for a week in the summer. Chase and Noah have done them all.
Noah now has his sights set on becoming a crime scene investigator based on presentations by our Bureau of Criminal Investigations staff. Chase has been inspired to be a school resource officer, like Mashpee Police School Resource Officer Katie Hennessey, and her K-9 partner Cara.
โThe first Explorers Program they did, Cara was with them for the entire week, and they loved Cara,โ Gina Raneo explained.
