🚒 Automatic Mutual Aid in Action! 🚒
At 7:09 AM this morning, the Mastic Beach Fire Department was activated for an automatic mutual aid response to the Mastic Fire Department for a reported structure fire.
As our members were arriving at headquarters and gearing up, Mastic Fire Department Chief Rudy Sunderman notified FireCom that he had a working structure fire, with smoke and flames showing.
Mastic Beach Engine 9 arrived on scene quickly, and our crew immediately split and conducted primary searches throughout the structure on both floors to ensure everyone had made it out safely, and placed ladders on the building to provide emergency escape routes if needed.
As the incident progressed, members assisted with overhaul operations, opening ceilings to locate and extinguish hidden pockets of fire in the attic. Crews also located a cat hiding inside a couch in the basement and were able to reunite it with its owner. Thankfully, all occupants and pets made it safely out of the building. 🐈⬛❤️
👏 Excellent work by all agencies involved! Thank you to the Mastic, Mastic Beach, Manorville, Center Moriches, East Moriches, Brookhaven, and Yaphank Fire Departments, along with the Mastic, Mastic Beach, and Shirley Ambulance Companies, for their coordinated efforts at the scene.
🚨 Today’s incident is a perfect example of why automatic mutual aid agreements are so important.
When a fire breaks out, time matters. These agreements allow neighboring departments to be dispatched automatically, bringing additional personnel and resources to the scene without waiting for a request for assistance after the incident begins. This automated response helps ensure that critical tasks can be handled simultaneously, improving firefighter safety and giving everyone inside the building the best possible chance of getting out safely.
Fire doesn't recognize district boundaries, and neither does our commitment to protecting our communities.
