The fire truck that comes when you call in most of Texas is driven by somebody who was asleep in their own bed four minutes ago. 🚒

The large majority of fire departments in this state are volunteer. Not paid, not on shift, not sitting at the station waiting. They are welders and teachers and nurses and guys who run a feed store, and they carry a pager or a phone that can go off in the middle of a shower, a birthday dinner, or a Tuesday at two in the morning. Then they drive to the station, pull gear that is still damp from the last call, and go.

They pay for a lot of it themselves, or the county pays what it can, or the community does it with a barbecue plate sale and a raffle. The trucks are often older than the people driving them. And the calls are not only fires. They are wrecks out on the highway at night, grass fires running with the wind, water rescues, and cardiac calls where the closest hospital is fifty minutes away and the volunteer EMT kneeling on the floor is the only medicine in the room.

The hard part nobody outside it talks about is that in a small town you know the address before you get there. 🙏 You know whose kitchen it is. You go anyway, and then you go back to work in the morning like it was nothing.

Yesterday, Sunday 9/13 May VFD was paged for mutual aid for a fire on Brown County Rd 123 with the Lake Bridge and several other departments along with TFS. The Holloway Creek fire was stopped fairly quick. Great job getting multiple departments and agencies on the scene quickly and home with only burning a little less than 20 acres officially.

Happy to say we had two trucks go down on the Blanket fire, one with pump issues and the other with turbo issues and as of Monday they are back up in service. These fires take a toll on equipment however we are proud to be apart of this county and our "Hit it with everything we got QUICK" attitude that kept the Neighbors Fire to 220 acres instead of 2,200 acres! Please know we couldn't be successful without each other which includes everyone, neighbors helping neighbors.

Just because it isn’t 100's of acres doesn’t mean it isn’t a big deal.

This 1.2-acre fire was anything but small when it came to the challenges it presented. We had downed power lines, homes threatened, firefighting equipment damaged, one firefighter suffering heat exhaustion, and a fire that took nearly 16 hours to reach 100% containment.

Three VFDs—May, Early, and Blanket—responded with 5 brush trucks and a tender, along with the Texas A&M Forest Service, which provided a strike team and multiple dozers.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who responded and worked this difficult fire, especially our volunteers who spent so many hours away from their families and jobs to protect our community.

We would also like to give a special thank you to County Judge Tom Munson and our Emergency Management Coordinator Cliff Karnes for feeding the crews yesterday. Food and drinks are always appreciated and go a long way when crews are working long hours.

The acreage may have been small, but the fire was anything but. We are incredibly grateful for every person who showed up, worked together, and helped get the job done safely. 🚒🔥

May VFD appreciates you all!

Help support families of fallen heroes. One was a Fire fighter and the other was a lineman who passed in a vehicle accident.

It’s all coming together!

Don’t forget — TOMORROW, April 25th is the May VFD BBQ!

We’ll be serving up some of the best BBQ in Northern Brown County, complete with all the fixings — donations only.

We’ve also got something special for the kids — they’ll get the chance to spray some water and check out the trucks, so bring the whole family!

It’s going to be a beautiful day, and we’ll have silent auction items, including handmade leather works from Kaysen King.

There will truly be something for everyone. Come out, enjoy some great food, and help support your May Volunteer Fire Department! 🚒❤️
