💚 HOMELESS DOESN'T ALWAYS MEAN LIVING ON THE STREETS.

When we think about homelessness, we often picture someone sleeping outside. But for many children and families, homelessness looks very different.

Did you know that under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, a child may be considered homeless even if they have a roof over their head?

🏠 Homelessness can include children who are:

▪️ Staying in an emergency shelter.

▪️ Living in a hotel or motel because their family has nowhere else to go.

▪️ Sleeping on a friend or family member's couch because they have lost their housing or are experiencing financial hardship.

▪️ Living in a vehicle or another place not intended for permanent housing.

📚 WHY DOES THIS MATTER?

The McKinney-Vento Act helps protect the educational rights of children experiencing homelessness. Eligible children have important protections, including:

✅ Immediate school enrollment, even without the usual paperwork.

✅ The ability to remain in their original school when appropriate.

✅ Transportation assistance to help them continue attending school.

💚 At The Lighthouse – A Healing Place, we believe every child deserves more than just a roof over their head. They deserve stability, security, and the opportunity to thrive.

A child shouldn't have to worry about where they will sleep tonight while trying to focus on learning tomorrow.

Homelessness isn't always visible. But the need for compassion, understanding, and support is very real.

🚧 BIG CHANGES are happening at The Lighthouse – A Healing Place! 💜

Walls are coming down, debris is going out, and our vision is becoming more real with every step! These updated construction photos show the work underway to transform this building into transitional housing for women and children facing homelessness.

Seeing these spaces opened up, we can’t help but imagine what’s ahead—children laughing, mothers finding room to breathe, and families beginning again. 🏡

Thank you to everyone praying, giving, working, and cheering us on. Your support is helping make this possible!

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the need for safe housing is closer to home than many realize.

💜 Nearly 1 in 2 Kentucky women have experienced intimate partner violence that impacted their lives.

While The Lighthouse is not the regional domestic violence shelter, when those shelters are full and we have availability, we want to be another safe place for women and children to rebuild their lives.
