We would like to share an event and fundraising effort for our friend and colleague, Erik Karlon.
Erik is a Maynard resident, former Maynard Police Officer and current Lieutenant for the Massachusetts State Police. He is a Retired United States Army 1st Sergeant. His military career spanned 30 years, including tours in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iraq, where he led soldiers in combat and security operations with the 94th Military Police Company. While deployed in Iraq he was injured by an IED. Erik then had a lengthy recovery at Walter Reed Hospital; he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service.
After his recovery, he returned to Massachusetts and continued his Law Enforcement career. He joined the Massachusetts State Police. During his career he mentored hundreds of troopers as the senior drill instructor at the MA State Police Academy, served with the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, was deputized as a United States Marshal, and held multiple leadership roles including Station Commander of the Concord Barracks. He is undergoing treatment for Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer and we know the Maynard community will come together to support Erik, his wonderful wife and three beautiful daughters

As you can see Erik is a man of service, sacrifice and commitment, for many years he and his wife have supported Honor Flight by fundraising events for many years here in Maynard and escorting Veterans to visit the memorials in Washington DC. We hope you can take a moment to review the flyer, to show your support or simply share some words of encouragement with him during this unimaginable fight the Karlon Family is facing. I want to take a moment to personally thank everyone who came out to support the Maynard Police Department’s Open House today. What an incredible day! It was wonderful to see so many families, and community members enjoying themselves, meeting our officers, and getting a chance to see some of what we do, and where we do it.

I also want to extend my sincere appreciation to all of our community partners and fellow public safety agencies who took time out of their busy schedules to join us. Your participation helped make this event something special, and we are grateful for your continued support and partnership.

A special thank you also goes out to the many local businesses, organizations, and individuals who generously donated food, drinks, supplies, and other items to help make this event possible. There were so many people and businesses who contributed that it would be difficult to recognize everyone individually, but please know that your kindness and support did not go unnoticed. Each of you played a huge role in making today a success, and we are incredibly grateful.

Most importantly, I want to recognize the men and women of the Maynard Police Department. Events like this don’t just happen. They take a tremendous amount of planning, preparation, coordination, and hard work. Our officers and staff stepped up to make sure this event was a success, and I could not be prouder of their efforts. Many went above and beyond, giving their time and energy to make this a memorable day for our community.

As Chief, one of the things I am most proud of is the dedication our officers have not only in keeping Maynard safe, but also building meaningful relationships with the people we serve. Today was a perfect example of that commitment.

To everyone who attended, participated, donated, volunteered, or helped behind the scenes, thank you!

We are fortunate to serve such a supportive community, and I am incredibly proud of the team we have here in Maynard.

Chief Christopher Troiano

Join Maynard PD with NHTSA's safety initiative and take a moment to read about the importance of teen driver safety!

Did you know?

- Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for teens (15-18 years old) in the United States.

- Data shows that, for teens (15-18 years old), some of the greatest dangers in the vehicle while driving include alcohol consumption, inconsistent or no seat belt use, distracted driving, speeding, and driving with passengers.

Remember the rules of the road:
o Don’t Drive Impaired: Drinking before the age of 21 is illegal in every state, and alcohol and driving should never mix, no matter your age. Remember that drugs - illegal, prescription, or over-the-counter medications - can also impair driving and have deadly consequences.
o Buckle Up - Every Trip, Every Time: Before you start your motor vehicle, check to make sure everyone is buckled correctly - front seat and back.
o Don’t Drive Distracted: You should never text, dial, or use mobile apps while driving. Other passengers, audio and climate controls, and eating or drinking while driving are also examples of dangerous distractions when driving.
o Follow the Posted Speed Limit: Speeding is a critical issue for all drivers, especially for teens who lack the experience to react to changing roadway circumstances. Remember: The faster you drive, the longer it will take to stop.
o Limit Passengers: With each passenger in the vehicle, your risk of a deadly crash goes up. Many states have laws for new teen drivers about how many passengers can be in the vehicle, or who is allowed to ride with a teen driver.
• Talk to your parents/guardians about safe driving year-round. If parents or guardians are discussing safe driving habits, make sure you listen - don’t tune them out!

Maynard High School Declared “All-Clear” After Hoax Threat

MAYNARD — The Maynard Police and Fire Departments responded to Maynard High School on Friday morning and investigated an anonymous nonspecific threat against the school.

At this time, officials have given the “all-clear” and the school day has resumed normally.

Officials take all threats seriously, however a preliminary investigation indicates that the threat was most likely an act of “swatting” — a malicious hoax report intended to draw a significant emergency response to a location.

Public safety officials conducted a thorough search of the building and determined that the threat was not credible. The building was put into safe mode for about 90 minutes as a precaution, restricting student and staff movement during the immediate public safety response.

Out of an abundance of caution, school families are likely to notice the increased presence of police and fire crews at the school throughout the day Friday, including during dismissal.
