Dekalb County. During the month of September 2026, Central Dekalb County Fire Protection District responded to 29 calls for service.
Emergency calls included a house fire. Other calls included a vehicle fire, vehicle accidents, medical emergency first responder calls and storm spotting. 27 volunteer firefighters responded to calls during September.
Community service calls included lift assist, wellness checks and traffic assist for funerals. Firefighters participated in the Country Harvest parade and assisted with traffic control for the parade. Firefighters displayed the U.S. flag from the aerial ladder truck at several community events during September.
Firefighters participated in 2 training sessions in September. Brian Graeff taught preparing to fight fire with full fire gear and SCBA air packs. Quintin Graeff taught vehicle extrication for gaining access to trapped patients.
Joshua Masoner, Tristin Helms and Quintin Graeff taught fire safety to the Maysville 6th graders. Kids were also asked to remind parents to check the batteries in the smoke detectors and practice the emergency exit plan in case of fire. Students were taught about the dangers of battery powered devices overheating and catching fire. Devices with lithium-ion batteries have caused about 200,000 home fires in the past 15 years. The incidence is increasing by 10% per year.
E-bikes and E-scooters have large batteries and have caused many house fires. Scooters and larger battery operated items should be charged outside the home. Laptops, portable chargers, and cordless power tools are also high fire risk items.
To reduce the risk of fire when charging portable devices, use the correct charger for the item and unplug the charger when fully charged.
Charge on a hard flat surface like a table, desk or floor. Do not charge on beds, couches, or under pillows. Devices and chargers produce heat during normal charging. Soft surfaces can trap heat and block airflow. When heat builds up, the battery can overheat and start a fire.
For all emergencies, please call 911. To report a controlled burn of brush or a field, call the dispatcher non-emergency number at 816-449-5802.
Our fire district is operated solely by volunteers from Maysville, Weatherby and Fairport. We appreciate your support.
