🇺🇸🎖️ VETERANS BENEFITS AWARENESS
WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR VA BENEFITS WHEN YOU PASS AWAY?

DID YOU KNOW? While a veteran’s VA disability compensation generally ends upon their death, certain surviving spouses, children, and dependent parents may qualify for benefits of their own.

Unfortunately, many military families are unaware of the benefits potentially available to them until they experience the loss of a loved one.

At Hidalgo County Veterans Services, we believe that honoring our veterans also means helping ensure their families understand the benefits and support they may be entitled to receive.

🇺🇸 5 IMPORTANT VA SURVIVOR BENEFITS EVERY MILITARY FAMILY SHOULD KNOW ABOUT

🔹 1. Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC)

DIC is a tax-free monthly benefit that may be available to eligible surviving spouses, children, or parents when a veteran dies from a service-connected condition or meets certain other VA eligibility requirements.

Important: A veteran does not always have to be rated 100% disabled for surviving family members to qualify for DIC.

🔹 2. VA Survivors Pension

Eligible surviving spouses and certain unmarried dependent children of deceased wartime veterans may qualify for needs-based financial assistance.

Eligibility depends on factors including qualifying military service, income, net worth, and other VA requirements.

🔹 3. VA Burial and Memorial Benefits

Eligible veterans and their families may qualify for burial benefits, including:

✔️ Burial in a VA national cemetery or eligible state veterans cemetery
✔️ Government-furnished headstones or markers
✔️ Burial flags
✔️ Presidential Memorial Certificates
✔️ Burial allowances for qualifying expenses

Eligibility varies by benefit.

🔹 4. CHAMPVA Health Coverage

Certain surviving spouses and dependent children may qualify for health coverage through the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA), depending on the veteran’s service-connected disability or cause of death and other eligibility requirements.

🔹 5. Education Benefits for Survivors and Dependents

The VA’s Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (Chapter 35) program may provide education and training benefits to eligible spouses and children of veterans who meet specific service-connected disability or death criteria.

🎖️ IMPORTANT: VA SURVIVOR BENEFITS ARE NOT ALWAYS AUTOMATIC!

Many benefits require a separate application, and some have filing deadlines that can affect eligibility or the effective date of payments.

Planning ahead and understanding what documentation may be needed can make a significant difference for surviving family members.

🇺🇸 YOUR SERVICE MATTERS. YOUR FAMILY MATTERS.

At Hidalgo County Veterans Services, our accredited County Veterans Service Officers (VSOs) are available to help veterans, surviving spouses, and eligible dependents understand potential VA benefits and navigate the application process.

Don’t wait until your family faces a difficult time to learn about these important benefits.

🇺🇸🎖️ VETERANS BENEFITS AWARENESS
THE BENEFITS YOU EARNED DON’T EXPIRE WHEN YOU STOP ASKING QUESTIONS!

DID YOU KNOW? Many veterans may be eligible for VA benefits they have never applied for or may qualify for an increase in their existing disability compensation.

Whether you served decades ago or recently separated from military service, it’s never too late to ask questions about the benefits you may have earned.

🪖 HERE ARE SOME THINGS EVERY VETERAN SHOULD KNOW:

✅ Never Filed a VA Disability Claim?
There is generally no time limit to file an initial claim for a service-connected disability, even if you separated from military service many years ago.

✅ Has Your Service-Connected Condition Worsened?
You may be eligible to request an increased disability rating if your condition has become more severe.

✅ Previously Denied VA Benefits?
A previous denial does not necessarily mean the end of the road. Depending on your circumstances, you may have options to seek further review or submit a Supplemental Claim with new and relevant evidence.

✅ Developed a Medical Condition Years After Service?
Some conditions may qualify for service connection even if symptoms or a diagnosis appeared years after separation. Veterans with qualifying toxic exposure may also be eligible under the PACT Act.

✅ Already Receiving VA Disability Compensation?
You may qualify for additional benefits based on secondary service-connected conditions or other eligibility requirements.

🇺🇸 WE’RE HERE TO HELP YOU NAVIGATE THE PROCESS!

At Hidalgo County Veterans Services, our accredited County Veterans Service Officers (VSOs) are available to assist veterans and eligible family members in understanding their VA benefits and navigating the claims process.

Our team can assist with:

🔹 Filing initial VA disability compensation claims
🔹 Requesting increased disability ratings
🔹 Reviewing previously denied claims and available review options
🔹 Filing claims for secondary service-connected conditions
🔹 Understanding PACT Act eligibility
🔹 Exploring additional VA benefits and services

YOU SERVED OUR NATION. NOW LET US SERVE YOU!

Don’t assume you’re not eligible. Don’t let a previous denial discourage you from asking questions. And don’t wait until your situation becomes more difficult to seek assistance.

🇺🇸✈️ THIS DAY IN MILITARY HISTORY | OCTOBER 14, 1947 ✈️🇺🇸

BREAKING BARRIERS: THE DAY HISTORY WAS MADE!

On this day, 79 years ago, U.S. Air Force Captain Charles “Chuck” Yeager made aviation history by becoming the first person to officially break the sound barrier in level flight.

Piloting the experimental Bell X-1 aircraft, nicknamed “Glamorous Glennis,” over the California desert, Yeager reached a speed of approximately Mach 1.06, accomplishing what many once believed was impossible.

This historic achievement forever changed the future of military aviation, opening the door to advancements in supersonic flight, aircraft technology, and American airpower.

🎖️ A LEGACY OF COURAGE AND INNOVATION

A World War II fighter ace and decorated military aviator, Yeager demonstrated the courage, determination, and pioneering spirit that continue to define the men and women of our United States Armed Forces.

At Hidalgo County Veterans Services, we proudly recognize the extraordinary contributions of military pioneers like Chuck Yeager, whose service and accomplishments helped shape our nation’s military history.

⚓🇺🇸 HAPPY 251ST BIRTHDAY, UNITED STATES NAVY! 🇺🇸⚓

October 13, 1775 – October 13, 2026

Today, Hidalgo County Veterans Services proudly celebrates 251 years of courage, honor, commitment, and distinguished service by the United States Navy!

On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the creation of what would become the United States Navy. For more than two and a half centuries, generations of Sailors have answered the call to defend our nation, protect our freedoms, and safeguard our interests across the world’s oceans.

From the earliest naval battles of the American Revolution to today’s missions around the globe, the United States Navy has remained a powerful symbol of American strength, resilience, and dedication.

⚓ To all Navy Veterans, active-duty Sailors, retirees, and their families: We thank you for your sacrifices, unwavering commitment, and honorable service to our great nation.

At Hidalgo County Veterans Services, we are proud to honor those who have worn the Navy uniform and remain committed to serving our Veterans and their families.

🇺🇸 Happy 251st Birthday, U.S. Navy!

HONOR • COURAGE • COMMITMENT

🧠🇺🇸 MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE TUESDAY
“REST IS NOT A REWARD. IT’S A NECESSITY.”

🎖️ VETERANS: DO YOU EVER FEEL GUILTY FOR DOING NOTHING?

In the military, we’re trained to stay busy, remain alert, complete the mission, and always be ready for what’s next.

But what happens when the mission ends and the mind still feels like it needs to be on duty?

For some Veterans, simply sitting down, relaxing, or taking a day off can bring feelings of guilt, restlessness, or the sense that they should be doing something more productive.

💡 HERE’S YOUR MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE:

You don’t have to be productive every minute of the day to have purpose.

✅ Taking a break doesn’t mean you’re lazy.

✅ Saying “not today” doesn’t mean you’re weak.

✅ Enjoying quiet time doesn’t mean you’re wasting time.

✅ Allowing yourself to rest doesn’t mean you’ve lost your discipline.

💚 YOUR MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS.

Rest gives your mind and body an opportunity to recharge. Even a few minutes away from daily responsibilities can help reduce stress and restore focus.

🇺🇸 REMEMBER, VETERANS:

You spent years answering the call of duty. It’s okay to answer the call of your own well-being, too.

“YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE ON DUTY TO BE WORTHY.”
