McCall Weather Your LOCAL source for weather in and around McCall, Idaho! More than just a forecast... About Me

Hello! My name is Todd Cook. Louis, Missouri. I loved it! S. Todd

I have created this page to share my passion for weather, and also provide a community service to those that live near McCall, Idaho. My love of weather started while growing up in St. When storms came, I would run to the couch and peer out the window to watch the swirling clouds and bolts of lightning. Even though sometimes I was scared, I was also fascinated with the power of weather, and how/why it happened. As I grew older, my father (who was a science teacher) would tell me the names of the clouds, and what they meant. Soon, I was studying on my own and would begin recording weather in my early teens. I also did my own weather summaries in my little weather office with a weather radio and the weather channel always on!
In high school and college, I continued my formal education (with an emphasis on Geography and Meteorology/Climate). For a while, I lived in Florida and got to experience a few tropical storms, and I also started “chasing” storms when severe weather threatened.
After college, I moved to the high country of Colorado for a winter and got to experience my first mountain weather climate. Soon thereafter, my family and I moved to California, and I got a job with the U. Forest Service and lived and worked in the mountains of Southern California. (Don’t laugh, some of the biggest snow storms I’ve ever experienced were there)! While my job was a ranger in the visitor center much of the time, I was still able to get out and weather watch while doing other assignments. I soon started producing my own specialized for the forest, at the visitor center I operated. I also took daily weather readings, and communicated regularly with the National Weather Service on local conditions where information/observations were scarce. During my 13 yr career with the USFS (in California and Washington State) I participated in local fires, often being staffed as a lookout, in addition to acting in an advisory position for weather/fire behavior information. I also worked closely with local ski areas on snow reports and other information.
In 2013, I “retired” from the USFS, and my wife and I started a multi-year journey of living in some amazing places! First, we moved from Leavenworth, Washington to Alta, Wyoming. It is there that I began doing my own weather forecasts on the page Teton Valley Weather, and was a local weather blogger for Teton Valley News. It was quite exciting living only a few miles from Grand Targhee resort, and seeing 500” of snow fall in the winter! My good friend Bruce took over that page in 2015 when my wife and I moved to Montana to “try it on”, and I began forecasting for the Flathead Valley. However, while we loved living in Whitefish (and near Glacier National Park), two years of endless gray winters were enough for us (we didn’t mind the snow and cold, however) so we moved to Pagosa Springs, CO. I forecasted for 3 years at Pagosa Weather. It was a challenging place to forecast, with the San Juan Mountains to our north/east and the San Juan Basin/Desert to our South/West. In fall of 2019, we decided we missed the Northern Rockies (and worried about the persistent drought conditions in the 4 corners area), so we moved to the McCall/New Meadows area, where we believe we have found our home for a long time! I took the past year observing the weather, but now I am ready to dive in. That being said, I know I have my work cut out for me as it was also quite challenging figuring out the local weather patterns last winter! My experience and education:

Some other things to know about me!
I love to snowboard, so you will see many updates and possible video reports and photos from Brundage, Tamarack and Little Ski Hill. (and other areas around our communities). I am NOT an early morning person, so you won’t be getting weather forecasts/updates generally until mid to late morning. While I do get up earlier than that, It it usually takes me up to an hour (or more) to w**d through forecast models and other data, upload images and write up a narrative . (That’s not to say that if we have significant weather conditions, I won’t make exceptions). I will do plenty of evening updates, so you will know what to expect when you wake up in the morning. During active weather, I will attempt to provide updates as often as possible. During inactive weather, you will get less updates.
I am doing this on my own time, and am not being compensated for it. While I do have a sense of responsibility to provide weather to the community, I will periodically take some vacations and time off, however I still try my best to provide information during those times if severe weather threatens.I have a good relationship with the National Weather Service Boise office. This page should NOT be considered a replacement for them. They are the authority for all official forecasts, watches, warnings, etc. They do an awesome job covering a very large, dynamic forecast area. My page is to be considered an additional source for more detailed, local weather in the McCall area. While I will provide forecasts for the area, the main focus will be on the details behind the forecast.
I love personal feedback and participation. Please contribute your reports/photos, discussion to the page! Thanks for following my page, and let's talk about the weather!

A slow warming trend this week...

Good evening,

Sorry for the late update. Time go a little away from me tonight.

Today's high only reached 45º in McCall. That's about 10º below 'normal'. Quite ironic as just a few days ago were were 20-30º above normal! Most areas saw at least a little rain this weekend, however amounts were very light.. generally under 1/10". Tamarack did see about a inch or snow last night, and it's snowing lightly at this hour.

Widely scattered showers, both rain and snow, will continue overnight (favoring southern/eastern parts of the area), as snow levels will drop to around 4,500'. Again though, little or no accumulation is expected... Winds will continue to be gusty in some locations, as they've been today wind chills in the 20/30s at my place today)! Lows will only drop into the upper 20s to mid 30s, mainly due to clouds/winds.

This large system (just to our SE) will continue to slowly move out on Monday, with a small chance of lingering showers in the AM. Partly sunny skies with some breezy winds will continue the chill, with highs mainly in the 40s.

The next few nights will be the coldest of the season. Lows will bottom out in the low to mid 20s for most, but teens will be common in those colder spots. Temperarures will slowly warm throughout the week, with highs back into the mid 60s by late week (low 70s Meadows Valley). As for meaningflul weather... there won't be much. Most of the week will see AM fog, and PM sun.

Have a good week,
Todd

A few changes to the forecast...

Damn, the sun is starting to set fast these days! I know, a few more weeks and it's going to be even worse! 🙃

Ok... so the latest models are now showing the front arriving Saturday Mid AM... (several hours later than previously expected last night). They've also all been trending even drier now, with most showing 1/10" or less precip through the weekend.

Again, it's a very close call with precip just to our SE, so any nudge to the west will give us a bit more rain. Temperatures are still expected to cool off significantly, so no change there.

Have a good weekend,
Todd

Get your thicker blankies out!

Good evening!

First off, record highs were set in McCall on Monday and Tuesday of this week, when the airport hit 82º. We were close again today, only one degree shy of the record of 80... (79º). Skies have mostly cleared of smoke tonight, but some smoke will still drain into the valleys overnight/friday AM.

Friday will be another mild day, although temperatures drop about about 5-10º lower than today. Sunny skies with light winds in the AM, but they may pick up a bit in the PM out of the south-ish.

Tomorrow night (Friday PM)... a strong (but limited w/moisture) cold front moves through, bringing much colder air into the region. If we get any precipitation, it will be light (under 1/10").

Saturday... the big shock to the system. Temperatures will struggle to get to 50 in McCall. There'll be some slight instability, so a few light rain showers are possible... but again, little or no accumulation. Snow levels will be around 7,000'.

Saturday PM/Sunday.... the stalled cold front is progged to lift a little north, and almost back into our area. If it does reach us, the better chance of showers will be overnight. Snow levels may drop below 6,000", so the first flakes of the season MIGHT be seen around town. No accumulation is expected though. Some isolated-scattered rain/snow showers are possible, with the better chance Sunday evening.. Lows Saturday night will dip into the low 30s. Highs Sunday will range from the upper 40's to low 50s. Total rainfall through Sunday PM will probably range from 1/10"-1/3". An inch or two of snow could accumulate above ~7,000'.

Monday... (COLUMBUS DAY) will continue to be cool, with temperatures in the low to mid 50s, WITH OVERNIGHT TEMPS IN THE LOW TO MID 20S.

There remains some uncertainty on Tuesday/Wednesday as that front/low will still be hanging around about 100 miles to our SE. Again, we'll be right on the edge of precipitation shield. Currently, only some light showers are expected. Meanwhile, the remnants of Hurricane Rachel will get sucked into the circulation and pummel areas just to our east with heavy rain. In fact, Twin Falls is modeled to get around 1" of rain. It's worth watching this as any shift further west could give us more rain/high mtn snow.

I'll try and check back in tomorrow PM with a short update.

Prepare for a hard freeze next week...

Good Morning,

Just a quick update...

Still a few more nice days (minus the smoke) before a big cooldown over the weekend and into next week. Precip chances still look rather low/light, as the brunt of the moisture will probably stay east. However, any shift to the track of the low westward, could mean a better chance for rain (and maybe a few snow showers).

The bigger story will probably be the chilly air. Overnight lows are expected to drop well into the 20s by early next week (maybe even some upper teens).... so, a hard freeze is likely. In case you haven't winterize everything (note to self), I'd probably do it in the next couple days.

More details on my next update, Thursday PM.

Winter of The Little Boy... ( El Niño )

So, what exactly is El Niño, and why is everyone buzzing about it for this winter? 🌍📉

Before we look at what it means for us around McCall, let’s quickly break down the basics without getting too bogged down in the science.

Basically El Niño ,is just a natural climate cycle that’s part of a bigger system called ENSO. It all kicks off thousands of miles away in the tropical Pacific Ocean near the equator.
Here is the quick breakdown of how it works:

⚬ Normal winds: Usually, steady trade winds blow west across the Pacific, pushing warm water toward Asia and letting cold, deep water bubble up near South America.

⚬ The shake-up: During an El Niño year, those trade winds slacken off or sometimes even flip in the opposite direction.

⚬ The warm-water slosh: Because the winds let up, a huge pool of warm water drifts back toward the middle and eastern parts of the Pacific.

Why should we care about warm water near the equator?

Think of the atmosphere as a giant heat engine. When you move massive pockets of warm water around, it totally messes with global wind patterns and shifts the jet stream (that high-altitude river of air that pushes storms around our planet). That shift creates a domino effect—causing droughts in some places, heavy flooding in others, and shaking up winter storm tracks all across North America.

Stay tuned for the next post, where we’ll dive into what this all actually means for winter weather, snowpack, and temps here in the West Central Mountains.

Sunday 10/4/26 - 8:45 PM

Continued warm and dry this week, with near record highs. Cooler, with a chance of showers this coming weekend/next week.

Good evening,

Short and sweet update:

It was a toasty one today, with McCall topping out at 81º, which was only 2º shy of the record.

Mostly sunny and warm conditions continue this week, with highs in upper 70s to low 80s (low to mid 80s for the Meadows Valley). Overnight lows will bottom out in the upper 30's to mid 40s. Some AM smoke is likely as RX fires continue across the region.

By the weekend, the ridge will weaken as a system tries to slide into the PNW. Cooler air is likely, along with a relatively small chance of showers (the way it looks now).

Have a good one,
Todd

Thursday 10/1/26 - 9:30 AM

Good Morning,

Still not much to talk about, as high pressure is firmly anchored over the much of the Western US. The ridge will continue stengthen over the weekend, boosting temperatures into the upper 70s to low 80s, while overnight lows will transition from the 30's into the 40s. There may be some patchy fog and/or smoke in the AM's, but that should mix out relatively quickly.

Still nothing in the long range, with only minor fluctuations in temperatures... High temps into next week will continue to mostly be in the 70s.

Enloy the nice, (albeit a bit warm for my taste 😏) weather!

Have a good weekend,
Todd

Sunday 9/27/26 -10:14 AM

Good Morning,

Lots of clouds today, as a weak trough moves through. About 90% of models show no precipitation, but a couple do spit out up to a few hundreths of an inch. Either way, it won't be a big deal.

Another beautiful week ahead, with plenty of sunshine and temperatures warming back into the mid 60's to low 70s. Overnight lows will mostly be in the 30s, with the exception of those few pockets of upper 20s. There could also be some AM fog in spots, but overall the atmosphere will be pretty dry.

Long range (1-2 weeks) is firmly showing dry and warm conditions across the west (as the cooler/wetter wx shifts to the east). This pattern may persist through much of October.

Have a good week,
Todd
