🕯️ In Memoriam — 70 Years of Honor 🕯️

Today, July 23, 2026, marks 70 years since Sergeant Robert "Bobbie Bull" Giovannoni of the McCook Police Department gave his life in the line of duty.

On July 23, 1956, Sergeant Giovannoni was serving as desk sergeant at the McCook Police Station when a 17-year-old suspect, brought in after a traffic stop, seized his service revolver. Even after being shot, Sergeant Giovannoni was able to call for help over the radio and make his way to the front of the station before he collapsed.

His courage in his final moments embodied everything it means to wear the badge.

Seven decades later, his sacrifice is not forgotten. The Village of McCook and law enforcement officers everywhere continue to honor his memory and the legacy he left behind.
As the tribute at his memorial reads: "It is not how these officers died that made them heroes. It is how they lived."

Today, we remember Sergeant Robert Giovannoni — his bravery, his devotion to duty, and the ultimate sacrifice he made for the community he served.

🖤 End of Watch: July 23, 1956 🖤

The Lawndale crossing remains CLOSED as of this morning due to ongoing track maintenance. Repairs, which were originally scheduled weeks in advance with signage posted, have been delayed following last night's inclement weather.

The crossing is expected to reopen late this morning. We will provide an update once it has been confirmed open.

If you have been impacted by this, you can contact BNSF directly at https://www.bnsf.com/about-bnsf/contact-us-form.page

Please note: The Village has NO control over rail crossings or their closings.
