Motor Vehicle Theft Investigation – Red Willow County

This morning, the Red Willow County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of multiple motor vehicle thefts occurring north of Indianola, Nebraska. Deputy James Wright and Sheriff Dalton Downing responded to the scene and began an investigation.

During the course of the investigation, it was determined the reported vehicle thefts were all related. The suspect was later located in Thomas County, Kansas, operating one of the vehicles reported stolen from Red Willow County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. The suspect attempted to flee but was subsequently apprehended and taken into custody.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.

The Red Willow County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Kansas Highway Patrol, Thomas County Sheriff’s Office, and the Colby Police Department for their assistance and cooperation throughout the investigation.

No further information is available at this time.

We have recently received several questions regarding Flock Safety cameras located within Red Willow County and want to provide some clarification.

The cameras currently being questioned were in place prior to me taking office as Sheriff. Our office did not purchase, install, or authorize their installation. We do not own the cameras, have access to them, or currently have plans to purchase or install Flock cameras.

We understand that residents may have questions or concerns regarding the use of this technology. However, we cannot remove, disable, or otherwise take action regarding equipment that is not owned or operated by our office and was not installed under our authority.

We hope this clears up any confusion regarding our involvement with the Flock cameras currently located within the county.

It has come to our attention that questions have been raised regarding the Red Willow County Sheriff's Office's relationship with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). We believe it is important to clearly communicate our position on this matter.

The Red Willow County Sheriff's Office remains committed to cooperating with ICE and will provide assistance in accordance with all applicable federal and state laws, as well as within the scope of our legal authority and available resources.

At this time, the Red Willow County Sheriff's Office does not have the funding or personnel resources necessary to participate in the federal 287(g) Program. While we are not currently entering into a 287(g) agreement, this should not be interpreted as a lack of support for lawful immigration enforcement.

Our office will continue to work collaboratively with ICE and our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners whenever appropriate and authorized by law.

We remain committed to protecting the citizens of Red Willow County while upholding the Constitution and faithfully executing our duties with professionalism, integrity, and respect for the rule of law.
