McFarland Fire and Rescue A page to bring department updates and information to the citizens of McFarland, WI regarding the status of their Fire & Rescue Department.

In 2014 the Fire & EMS Departments for the Village of McFarland joined forces to become McFarland Fire & Rescue. The Fire Department was originally established in 1908, and EMS Department in 1977. The McFarland Fire & Rescue Department provides fire protection, and EMS service at the Advanced EMT Level (IV-Tech) to a 28 square mile fire district made up of the Village of McFarland and portions of the Town of Dunn, and the Town of Pleasant Springs. In addition to the urban business, industrial, and residential portions of the Village of McFarland, Town of Dunn, and Town of Pleasant Springs, we also provide water and ice rescue coverage to portions of Lake Kegonsa, Lake Waubesa, and the Yahara River. We also maintain Mutual Aid agreements with surrounding area departments for larger incidents, EMS assistance, and Paramedic Intercepts. The goal of the Department is to protect the life and property of the fire/ems district residents and guests; and to educate them in ways they can protect themselves and their property through fire awareness and other safety campaigns. The department is made up of approximately 65 Paid-on-call members, and seven full-time staff which includes four Advanced level EMTs, and Administrative Captain, a Fire Inspector/Public Education Specialist, and Fire Chief. All Members of the Department are dedicated to providing the best service and care to those in our response area.

Today is National Move Over Slow Down Day!

Over the last five years, 128 people in Wisconsin were injured roadside while inside or near a stopped vehicle. Wisconsin's Move Over Law requires drivers traveling on a road with two or more lanes in the same direction to move out of the lane closest to stopped law enforcement vehicles, ambulances, fire trucks, tow trucks, utility or highway maintenance vehicles with their warning lights activated.

If you are unable to safely move over or are on a single-lane road, drivers must slow down when passing vehicles with their warning lights on.

Police, Fire, and Public Works Departments emphasize safety for you every day. Our safety matters too.

Slow down. Move over. Let’s all make it home safely.

As Fire Prevention Week comes to a close, we would like to thank everyone who joined us Wednesday evening for our annual Fire Prevention Open House!

It was great seeing so many families, friends, and community members come together to learn about fire safety, explore our equipment, and meet the people who serve our community. A special thank you to all our community partners, organizations, and volunteers who helped make the evening a success!

One last fire prevention tip!

This year's Fire Prevention Week theme was "Charge Into Fire Safety. Safe Charging Is a Superpower!"

Remember to charge phones, tablets, and other lithium-ion battery devices on a hard, flat surface. Never charge them on a bed, couch, or under a pillow, where heat can build up and create a fire hazard.

Fire Prevention Week may be ending, but fire safety is important every day of the year!

For Tools and Rides, Charge Outside!

Your garage might be full of projects, but let's not make your next project a fire restoration!

As we continue recognizing Fire Prevention Week, McFarland Fire & Rescue wants to remind everyone about the importance of safely charging lithium-ion batteries found in power tools, e-bikes, and scooters.

A few simple safety tips:

- Charge batteries outdoors when possible, in a dry, protected location
- Use a manufacturer approved charger.
- Avoid charging batteries in doorways, hallways, or other exit paths.
- Stop using batteries that are damaged, swollen, leaking, or overheating.

Remember, the only thing we want heating up in your garage is your next great project, not your batteries!

Small actions can make a big difference in preventing fires.

Cheap Charger? Don’t Chance It!

As we recognize Fire Prevention Week, McFarland Fire & Rescue reminds our community that small actions can make a big difference in preventing fires.

Damaged or inexpensive, uncertified chargers can pose a serious fire risk.

Help keep your home and family safe by following these simple tips:

- Use chargers approved by the device manufacturer.
- Look for chargers certified by a recognized testing laboratory, such as UL or ETL.
- Replace charging cords that are frayed, damaged, or overheating.
- Never charge devices on beds, couches, or under pillows.
- Unplug devices if you notice unusual heat, odors, or damage.

Remember: Saving a few dollars on a charger isn't worth risking a fire.

Since 1922, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has sponsored the public observance of Fire Prevention Week. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance, making it the longest-running public health observance in our country. During Fire Prevention Week, children, adults, and teachers learn how to stay safe in case of a fire.

What happens when you call 911?

Come find out this Wednesday at the McFarland Fire and Rescue Fire Prevention Open House.

Our partners from Dane County 911 will be joining us. They are the people who answer 911 calls and help coordinate police, fire, and emergency medical services throughout Dane County.

Stop by their display, meet some of the people behind the headset, and learn what happens from the moment you call 911 until emergency responders arrive.

Public safety communicators are a critical first link in an emergency. They gather important information, provide instructions when needed, and make sure the appropriate emergency resources are sent your way.

Join us Wednesday, October 7, at the McFarland Public Safety Center.

Come say hello, ask questions, and meet some of the people you may hear during an emergency but rarely get the opportunity to meet in person.

We hope to see you Wednesday!
