"We will never forget their sacrifice. We will always remember that we are standing on the shoulders of giants."
On Oct. 15, our members gathered to honor our World War II heritage during a ceremony commemorating the 83rd anniversary of the Second Schweinfurt Raid, known historically as "Black Thursday."
On Oct. 14, 1943, the 305th Bombardment Group flew into the heart of Germany. Of the 15 B-17 Flying Fortresses that departed, only two returned. The group sustained the heaviest losses of the Eighth Air Force that day, with 130 brave Airmen killed, captured, or wounded.
During the ceremony, Capt. Nicholas Pirovolidis shared a historical summary of the raid, while Col. Allen Morris Jr. spoke on the enduring strength of our heritage. To honor the fallen, the 305th AMW flag was lowered to half-staff.
Today’s Airmen carry that same legacy of courage, dedication, and readiness forward into the future of rapid global mobility. ✈️
