McMinnville Water & Light has won two awards in the Northwest Public Power Association's Excellence in Communications contest. MW&L earned a second-place award In the Internal Communications category for bulletin board design and a second-place award in the Special Publication category for electric and water bill comparison graphics. Winners were announced last month at the NWPPA Communications Conference in Walla Walla, Washington.

UPDATE, 6:45 p.m.: Power has been restored to all customers.

A power outage caused by a tree limb down on a power line is affecting about 40 customers on Fox Ridge Road. Crews are on the scene. Estimated time of restoration is about 2 hours.

This week is Source Water Protection Week and here in McMinnville, the source of our drinking water begins high in the Coast Mountain Range northwest of the city. To protect our water source - McGuire and Haskins Reservoirs - MW&L strictly prohibits public access inside the watershed. Protecting the water before it reaches our treatment plant is an important part of providing high-quality drinking water to you!

Flashback Friday for ! Pictured here is MW&L Commissioner Walter S. Link standing on the Haskins Creek Impounding Dam with the reservoir behind him. Link's foresight was instrumental in the utility's purchase of most of the timber land comprising the watershed from the 1920s into the 1940s, resulting in McMinnville's clean water. Link died in 1946 during his 10th term of service on the McMinnille Water & Light Commission. In February 1951, before concluding the dam-raising construction work necessary to increase the reservoir's capacity, the Commission renamed the site the Walter S. Link Impounding Dam and Reservoir as a tribute to Link's watershed efforts. Raising the dam from 815 feet to 835 feet increased the reservoir's volume from 100 million gallons to 250 million gallons.

MW&L currently has a job opening for an Electrical Engineering Technician 1-3 in the Engineering Department. The Electrical Engineering Technician 1-3 position plays an important role at the utility by working with customers, contractors, and staff to design and construct electrical systems. This position performs a variety of technical office and field tasks to support the design, construction, and maintenance of electrical distribution systems and facilities under general supervision. The McMinnville Water & Light Commission recently approved changes to water and electric rates, which will go into effect Thursday, October 1, 2026. The new rates are necessary to cover increases in the costs of providing service, including costs to build, finance, maintain, and improve operations and to plan for growth or unforeseen events.
Water rates will increase 4% overall, and electric rates will increase 4.5% overall considering all rate classes. For example, a water bill for a residential customer who uses 1500 cubic feet/month (3/4” water meter) will increase $1.23 a month. The electric bill for a residential customer who uses 1230 KWH/month will increase $4.84. Even with the increase, McMinnville Water & Light water and electric rates continue to be among the lowest compared to other utilities in our region. Throwback Thursday for ! By late summer in 1940, McMinnville Water & Light workers had erected power poles at the northwest corners and intersections of Fourth and Macy, Logan, Kirby, Johnson and Irvine streets and were threading the necessary high-voltage power lines to connect the McMinnville area with Bonneville Power Administration transmission lines. Just in time for the howling winds and rains of autumn, on October 19, 1940, power from the Bonneville Dam flowed through the McMinnville Water & Light network and into the homes and businesses of its customers. Thus, just past its 50-year milestone, McMinnville’s utility became a hydroelectric power distributor for BPA, garnering long-term, inexpensive and reliable electricity for the city’s homes and businesses.
