Honoring EMS Heroes of 9/11
Twenty-five years ago, on September 11, 2001, our nation experienced one of the darkest days in American history. On that tragic day, thousands of lives were lost, and countless first responders answered the call without hesitation.
Among those heroes were the dedicated members of Emergency Medical Services.
As the events of September 11 unfolded, EMS personnel responded with the same courage, compassion, and commitment that defines the profession. Paramedics and EMTs rushed toward unimaginable danger, ready to provide care, comfort, and hope to anyone who needed them.
The FDNY lost 343 rescue workers that day, including 341 firefighters and two paramedics. Those two paramedics made the ultimate sacrifice while doing what EMS professionals do every day—answering the call to help others.
But the service and sacrifice of EMS did not end on September 11.
In the days, weeks, months, and years that followed, countless EMS professionals continued working at Ground Zero and in surrounding areas. They provided medical care, assisted victims and fellow responders, and stood beside their communities during an unimaginable time of grief and recovery. Many first responders have also faced—and continue to face—the lasting health effects connected to their service at and around the World Trade Center site.
Today, we remember every life lost on September 11, 2001, and we honor the bravery of the men and women who answered when their country and their communities needed them most.
To all EMS personnel who responded on 9/11, and to every paramedic and EMT who continues to serve today: Thank you.
Thank you for running toward danger when others are running away.
Thank you for your courage in the face of fear.
Thank you for your compassion during moments of unimaginable pain.
Thank you for answering the call—day after day, night after night, often without recognition or knowing what you may face.
The sacrifices made on September 11 will never be forgotten. The EMS community stood strong then, and the spirit of service demonstrated that day continues to inspire EMS professionals across this nation.
We remember. We honor. We will never forget.
Thank you, EMS, for your service, your sacrifice, and your unwavering commitment to helping others.
