HANDS-ON LEARNING!

Recently, Students from Mt. Spokane High School spent the day restoring riparian habitat in the Waikiki Springs Natural Area. Partnering with the Lands Council and the Inland Northwest Land Conservancy, both of the Environmental Studies CTE courses at Mt. Spokane (AP Environmental Science and AP Human Geography) planted approximately 300 trees along a stretch of the Little Spokane River as stakeholders have revitalized a critical community resource for the enjoyment of future generations, continuing a community service that students from these courses have contributed to over the last four years throughout Spokane County.

Congratulations to Mead High School great Pat Tyson on his election into the Inland Northwest Sports Hall of Fame last night! Coach Tyson left his mark on so many young people in the Mead community.

So much good stuff from those who competed for him:

The best way to unpack the Tyson legend is by going straight to his army of legacies – the Mead and Gonzaga runners who heard the melody from his magic flute and let it carry them through early morning runs and major races and still harken to it in their adult lives. Here is the Pat Tyson they kno...

BUILDING FUTURE ENGINEERS

Last week, senior engineering students from Mt. Spokane High School's Engineering Design & Development (EDD) class were invited to join the 10th Annual Association of Washington Business (AWB) Manufacturing Week tour. Students toured the new PACCAR Engineer Building at Whitworth University, while getting to meet current Whitworth Engineering students and staff, local business leaders, and industry experts!

Friday night's Lewis and Clark vs. Mt. Spokane matchup will be much more than just a football game for both schools with the honoring of John Hook, longtime LCHS football coach and former Mt. Spokane High School Principal (2003-2014). The game will also serve to raise awareness for Spokane's Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

For those who don't know John, here a couple anecdotes from current employees that had the joy of getting to know him:

From MSHS teacher and coach Alex Schuerman: "I loved working for John Hook. It was actually more working with John than for him. His strong servant leadership helped build amazing relationships as he worked alongside us. I am forever grateful for the kindness and love he showed me and my colleagues. John's love and care for people is tough to duplicate. I am honored to know him."

From MSD Director of Schools Jeff Naslund: "John Hook’s brilliant mind and massive heart have always lifted me up. As a young teacher and coach, he believed in me and invested in me before I fully believed in myself. He truly saw me. He epitomizes the very best of education. An exceptional coach. A trusted mentor. A courageous leader. And, above all, someone who made people better because he believed they could be. I am forever grateful that he was the first principal to take a chance on me.”

Drop a comment to share your appreciation for John Hook below!

Kickoff on Friday, Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m. Visit onespokanestadium.com/events for ticket information. The Walk to End Alzheimer's takes place the next day, Saturday, Oct. 3. Learn more at act.alz.org/spokane.
