πŸš’πŸ”₯ Dozer 9 Responds to Two Wildfires Over the Weekend

This past weekend, Spokane County Fire District 9’s Dozer was requested to assist Spokane County Fire District 8 and District 5 with two separate wildfires outside our district.

While temperatures have cooled down, wildfire danger is still elevated across our area. So far this October, Spokane has received only 0.02 inches of precipitation, compared to an average of approximately 0.70 inches at this point in the month. With very little rainfall, vegetation remains dry and susceptible to fire.

As we continue through fall, here are a few simple reminders:

πŸ”₯ Never leave open flames unattended and fully extinguish fires.

πŸ‚ Check local burning restrictions and avoid burning on windy days.

Even though summer is behind us, wildfire prevention remains important. A little extra caution can go a long way toward keeping our communities safe.

Stay safe, Spokane County! πŸš’

Last Thursday, we spent the afternoon with our friends at Avista, providing hands-on first aid skills. Their crews often work in hazardous conditions and remote locations, where they may be the first to reach someone in need.

While we taught the class, we also learned alongside Avista’s crews about how we can work together during these emergencies. These opportunities help us understand each other’s roles, improve communication, and prepare for incidents where we’ll depend on one another. We’re grateful for this partnership and the chance to learn together.

Proposition 1 would support ongoing training such as this, helping our crews explore new topics, build their skills, and strengthen the teamwork we rely on when our community needs us.

Last week, Chief Vinci presented Captain Jeremy Bunney with his 30-year service pin! πŸš’

Jeremy joined D9 as a resident firefighter in 1995 and was hired as a career firefighter in 2000. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2018 and to captain this August, and now serves as captain of Station 92.

Milestones like this show how much our firefighters invest in our agency. The best way to honor and protect that investment is for our district to continue investing in them.

Thank you, Captain Bunney, for three decades of dedication to D9 and our community!

πŸš— Vehicle Fire Safety Reminder

District 9 crews have responded to a recent uptick in vehicle fires. With colder weather approaching, now is a great time to make sure your vehicle is properly maintained.

Check for fluid leaks, electrical issues, and other mechanical problems before temperatures drop.

A little preventative maintenance now can help reduce the risk of a vehicle fire and keep you safe on the road this winter!

Proposition 2: A Proposal Focused on Fire Station Wellness and Readiness

Last year, we partnered with TCA Architecture + Planning to conduct an independent assessment of our fire stations and facilities. This partnership provided an objective look at the condition of our buildings and how well they support our crews' health, wellness, safety, and operational readiness across the district.

The assessment examined the structures, mechanical systems, layouts, and essential functions our firefighters rely on every day. Using five key measures, the evaluation helped identify how our facilities support both the people who serve our community and the critical work they perform.

Program: Do our rooms provide the appropriate space, equipment, and functionality to meet our crews’ daily needs?

Turnout: Does each station layout allow firefighters to move quickly and efficiently from an emergency alert to their response vehicles?

Wellness: Do our stations provide appropriate spaces for sleep, physical fitness, rest, and recovery?

Contaminant Control: How effectively do our facilities protect firefighters from diesel exhaust and other harmful contaminants in living and working areas?

Site: Do our properties provide adequate space for emergency vehicles, training, parking, fueling, backup power, and other essential support systems?

The resulting station scorecards provide a clear picture of how each facility performed across these five areas. This assessment gives SCFD9 an important foundation for understanding our current needs, prioritizing improvements, and making informed decisions that support firefighter wellness, safer working environments, and reliable emergency services for our community.
