🔥🚒 **FIRE PREVENTION DOESN'T END WITH OCTOBER.**

As Fire Prevention Month comes to an end, we want to thank everyone who followed along, shared our posts and took some time this month to make their homes and families safer.

Remember the basics throughout the year:

🚨 Maintain and test your smoke and CO alarms.
🏠 Practice your home escape plan.
🍳 Cook safely.
🔥 Use heating equipment carefully.
🔌 Use electrical equipment and batteries safely.
💧 Keep fire hydrants accessible.
🔢 Make sure we can find your address.

The best fire is the one that never starts.

From all of us at the **Hampden Township Volunteer Fire Company**, thank you for doing your part to help keep Hampden Township safe!

🔥🏠 **TONIGHT'S CHALLENGE: PRACTICE YOUR ESCAPE PLAN!**

We've spent October talking about fire prevention. Tonight, we're asking Hampden Township families to put that information into action.

🚨 Press the TEST button on your smoke alarms.

Then ask everyone to pretend the alarm has activated and practice getting outside.

Remember:

🚪 Know two ways out whenever possible.
📍 Meet at your designated meeting place.
🚫 Once you're outside, stay outside.
📞 Call 911 from a safe location.

Time your drill if you'd like—and talk afterward about anything that could make your family's plan better.

**Five minutes tonight could make all the difference someday.**

🔥 Chimney Fire Training

Tonight, Hampden Fire volunteers spent time training on chimney fire response as we prepare for the colder months ahead.

Chimney fires can be especially dangerous because fire can spread beyond the chimney into walls, attics, and other concealed spaces. Our firefighters train to safely extinguish these fires, check for fire extension, and protect the rest of the home.

As temperatures drop and fireplaces and wood stoves get more use, here are a few reminders to keep your home safe:

🔥 Have your chimney inspected annually by a qualified professional and cleaned as needed.

🔥 Burn only dry, seasoned wood to help reduce creosote buildup.

🔥 Make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working.

🔥 If you suspect a chimney fire, get everyone outside and call 911.

🔥 After a chimney fire, don’t use your fireplace or wood stove again until the system has been professionally inspected.

A little prevention goes a long way toward keeping your family and home safe this heating season.

🚒💧 **HELP US KEEP FIRE HYDRANTS CLEAR!**

Fire hydrants are an important part of our community's fire protection system.

If you have a hydrant near your property:

🌳 Keep bushes and vegetation trimmed away.
🍂 Remove leaves and debris.
🚗 Never park where your vehicle blocks access to the hydrant.
❄️ When winter arrives, help keep snow and ice cleared from around it.

We recommend maintaining approximately **3 feet of clear space around the hydrant** whenever possible.

During a fire, firefighters shouldn't have to search for or dig out the water supply they need.

A few minutes of work around your neighborhood hydrant can save valuable time during an emergency.

🚒🏠 **HELP US FIND YOU!**

When you call 911, every second matters—but first responders need to be able to find you.

Take a look at your house from the street tonight.

🔢 Is your house number clearly visible?
🌙 Can it be seen at night?
🌳 Is it hidden by trees, bushes or decorations?
📫 If your home sits back from the roadway, is the address clearly marked near the entrance?

Use numbers that are large, easy to read and provide good contrast with their background.

What looks obvious to you during the day can be much harder to locate from an emergency vehicle at 2:00 in the morning.

**Help us find you when you need us most.**

🔌🔋 **CHARGE INTO FIRE SAFETY!**

Phones, tablets, laptops, power tools, e-bikes and countless other devices in our homes rely on rechargeable batteries.

Use and charge them safely.

🔌 Use charging equipment recommended or approved for your device.
🔋 Stop using batteries that are damaged, swollen, unusually hot, leaking or producing an unusual odor.
🛏️ Don't charge phones, tablets or other devices underneath pillows or bedding.
🚪 Keep charging devices away from exits and escape routes.
⚡ Don't overload electrical outlets or power strips.
🧯 Replace damaged electrical cords and equipment.

If a lithium-ion battery begins smoking, popping, overheating or burning, **get away from it, evacuate the area and call 911.**

This morning, Hampden Fire volunteers and staff assisted the East Pennsboro Fire Department with a kitchen fire.

A good reminder to everyone to keep a working fire extinguisher in or near your kitchen and know how to use it.

If a fire is small and contained, you may be able to safely extinguish it yourself. But if the fire is growing or you can’t control it immediately, get everyone outside and call 911.

Even if you successfully put the fire out, call the fire department. Fire can spread into cabinets, walls, and other hidden spaces without being obvious. We’d much rather come check things out and make sure everything is safe than have a small fire turn into a much bigger problem.
