The last few weeks have been a blessed mix of teaching savvy seniors how to navigate senior years better. It was also about fielding calls from families needing aging in place services.

This work requires me to pivot frequently from how I thought the day would go to how the day needs to go, and in that mix is an important distinction. In those moments is where making a difference happens.

I was blessed today to meet a 96-year-old man. I was able to teach him how to use his remote better to help him get out of his chair so that he didn’t have to ask someone else for help. His expression showed confidence, accomplishment and relief. He was happy. These are the kind of days and weeks I’m having. Life is about giving and living it to the fullest. I hope you have found your calling.🍁🍂

What conversations should we be having about aging before we need to make a decision?

This Wednesday I begin teaching a six-week course through SOU’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) in downtown Medford:

Senior Living Roadmap – Navigating the Journey

We’ll explore the options and conversations that come with aging—from staying safely at home to understanding independent living, assisted living, memory care and other care settings. We’ll also talk about costs, planning, family communication, and why these decisions can be so difficult to begin.

My goal isn’t to tell people what they should do. It’s to help them understand their options before a crisis makes the decisions for them.

I’m looking forward to six weeks of learning, questions and some very meaningful conversations.

Because we age in stages...

Some great questions came up today in a meeting I had with a couple in Jacksonville. “We want to stay in our home for as long as possible. How can we make that happen?”

Whether it is now or later, the right time to create Plan A and Plan B is now which is exactly what we started today. Planning early gives you choice and control without the pressure of a crisis. What's one question you have about senior care options? Drop it in the comments below!

If you’ve ever wondered what aging well actually requires—or found yourself helping a parent figure it out—this may be for you.

I’m teaching a six-week OLLI at SOU course, Aging in Stages: Navigating the Journey, beginning September 16.

We’ll talk about the choices, costs and conversations that come with aging—and why planning before a crisis can help preserve choice.

If you’re thinking about your own next chapter, helping your parents navigate theirs, or simply want to be better prepared, I’d love to have you join me!

“Years ago, anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilization in a culture. The student expected Mead to talk about fishhooks or clay pots or grinding stones.

But no. Mead said that the first sign of civilization in an ancient culture was a femur (thighbone) that had been broken and then healed. Mead explained that in the animal kingdom, if you break your leg, you die. You cannot run from danger, get to the river for a drink or hunt for food. You are meat for prowling beasts. No animal survives a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal.

A broken femur that has healed is evidence that someone has taken time to stay with the one who fell, has bound up the wound, has carried the person to safety and has tended the person through recovery. Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts, Mead said.

We are at our best when we serve others.”
