Chateau De Mores State Historic Site Home of the Marquis de Morès, founder of Medora. Summer Hours: 9:00am - 5:00pm MST, Daily. Last tickets sold at 4:00pm MST. Covers entry to Interpretive Center.

Covers entry to the Interpretive Center and Chateau de Morès. Off-Season Hours: 9:00am - 5:00pm MST, Tuesday-Saturday. Located just across the river SW of Medora, the site interprets the North Dakota ambitions of Antoine de Vallombrosa, the Marquis de Morès, who arrived in 1883. His enterprises included a beef packing plant, stagecoach line, freighting company, refrigerated railway cars, cattle, and sheep raising, land ownership, and a new town named Medora in honor of his wife. Chateau De Mores: This 26-room, two-story frame building was built in 1883 as the summer residence of the Marquis's family. The Chateau is now a historic house museum containing many original furnishings and personal effects of the de Morès family. Tours are available during the summer months for a fee. School and commercial bus tour group rates are available. Allow at least one hour for your visit. De Mores Memorial Park: Located in downtown Medora, the park features a bronze statue of the Marquis de Morès donated in 1926 by his sons. The statue is surrounded by a flagstone courtyard, the result of a 1938 WPA project. This is the perfect spot for a break in the shade. Packing Plant/Chimney Park: Situated on the west edge of Medora, the site once contained the plant, a slaughterhouse, three ice houses, several outbuildings, a railroad spur track, and a corral. The building burned in 1907, leaving the tall, native clay brick chimney standing. The only picnic area in town is located next to the ruins.

❄️ Something New This Winter at the Chateau de Morès! ❄️

We're trying something a little different this year, and we're excited to share it with you! We're extending our winter visitor experience to include the historic Chateau itself!

Our Interpretive Center and museum galleries have welcomed visitors year-round for many years, but this winter we're hoping to welcome guests into the Chateau as well, whenever weather and staffing allow!

🏡 Experience the Chateau in a Different Season!

Most visitors explore the Chateau during the warmer months, but winter offers a unique opportunity to experience this beautiful historic home in a whole new way.

Imagine what life must have been like for the Marquis de Morès, his family, and the people who worked here in the 1880s, long before modern heating and the conveniences we enjoy today.

🧣 A Little Winter Chill Comes with the History!

Thanks to our new heating and cooling system, the Chateau is now better equipped to welcome visitors during colder weather. However, this historic home is more than 140 years old, and even with modern heating, it still has its share of drafts and chilly spots. The colder it gets outside, the cooler the house may feel inside.

And don't forget about the walk! The Chateau sits approximately a block and a half from the parking lot, and that walk up the hill can feel especially chilly during a North Dakota winter.

We encourage everyone to dress warmly! Coats, hats, gloves, and weather-appropriate footwear are recommended.

While much of the Chateau is heated, our Back Room remains unheated, so you'll definitely want those extra layers if you plan to explore that part of the house.

🌨️ Planning Your Winter Visit? Here's What to Know!

🏛️ Interpretive Center & Museum Galleries

Our Interpretive Center continues its regular year-round operations and is open Tuesday through Saturday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Come explore our exhibits and learn about the history of the Marquis de Morès, his family, and Medora in the comfort of our indoor galleries.

🏡 The Historic Chateau

Winter access to the Chateau is our new addition this year! The house will be open when staffing is available and weather conditions allow us to safely welcome visitors. Snow, ice, and extreme cold may occasionally prevent us from opening the historic house, even when the Interpretive Center is open.

📞 Want to Tour the Chateau?

We recommend calling us at 701-623-4355 before making the trip to confirm that the historic house will be open.

✨ We'd Love to See You This Winter!

Whether you're a longtime visitor or have never stepped inside the Chateau, we hope you'll take advantage of this opportunity to experience a different side of Medora's history.

There's something special about exploring a historic home during the same season that presented so many challenges to the people who lived and worked on the Dakota frontier.

We look forward to welcoming you!

Sheriff Hank Wants to Hear Your Stories!
The history of the Chateau de Morès is about much more than the years the Marquis and Medora lived here.
The Chateau has been a family home, a boarding house and tea room, a Civilian Conservation Corps project, a museum, and a state historic site. And through every chapter, there were people here whose stories became part of its history.
Over the last few years, we have been fortunate to meet visitors with some remarkable connections to the Chateau. We have met relatives of servants who worked for the Marquis and Medora, relatives of guests who stayed here during the boarding house years, descendants of the last caretakers, relatives of the CCC boys who worked at the site, and even relatives of the site supervisors who cared for the Chateau after it became a museum.
Every one of them had a story to tell.
Now Sheriff Hank and the Site Supervisor are teaming up to ask for your stories.
History is memory, and your memories count.
Maybe you visited the Chateau as a child. Maybe someone in your family worked here. Maybe your grandparents talked about the CCC boys. Maybe a relative remembered the boarding house, a former caretaker, an early site supervisor, a school trip, an event, or something entirely different.
And the memory doesn't have to be your own. If it is a story your parents, grandparents, relatives, neighbors, or friends passed down to you, we would love to hear it.
Big stories, little stories, funny stories, everyday memories—we want them all. You never know when one person's memory might help us understand another piece of the Chateau's history.
Tell Sheriff Hank and the Site Supervisor your story.
You can share it right here in the comments, email us at [email protected], or mail it to:
