This weekend, Billings County EMS received the NDEMSA Southwest Regional Service of the Year Award, and I couldn’t be prouder of the people who earned it.

We have a pretty special group of people at BCEMS. Each brings something different to the team, but they all care about doing right by our patients, our communities, and each other. This award is a reflection of the work they put in every day, and I’m glad to see them recognized for it.

Our team serves residents and visitors throughout Billings County, including Medora, the Badlands, and Theodore Roosevelt National Park, as well as portions of Golden Valley and Dunn Counties and western Stark County, including Belfield and South Heart. This recognition reflects their dedication to everyone we serve across that area.

Their families deserve a big thank you, too. They give up time with their loved ones and support them through everything that comes with working in EMS.

Thank you also to the person who nominated us. We appreciate you taking the time to recognize our team.

To our BCEMS team, this is YOUR AWARD. Thank you for the care you give and everything you do for this service. I’m humbled to work alongside you and glad to see you get the recognition you deserve.

We were glad to have a large number of our team at the conference to accept this award together, although we were still missing many dedicated members who couldn’t attend. We also want to recognize our past members who helped build BCEMS into the service it is today. Each of you has played a part in this, and we’re proud to share this recognition with you.

Summary of Narrative:
Billings County EMS is a highly dedicated rural EMS agency that provides exceptional care to residents and thousands of visitors in and around Medora, the Badlands, and Theodore Roosevelt National Park. In 2026, the service played a key role during the opening of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library and the visit of President Donald J. Trump, ensuring seamless emergency coverage during a major influx of visitors while maintaining uninterrupted care for the community.

Every day, Billings County EMS responds to emergencies across remote terrain, scenic roadways, campgrounds, hiking trails, and neighboring towns, requiring strong clinical skills and close coordination with partner agencies. The service is deeply committed to community education—offering CPR, First Aid, and Stop the Bleed courses—and invests heavily in ongoing training for its providers. Known for professionalism, teamwork, and compassionate care, the agency consistently meets extraordinary challenges despite limited rural resources.

For its dedication to patient care, community service, and regional EMS advancement, Billings County EMS is highly deserving of the Regional Service of the Year Award.

Billings County EMS is proud to recognize Susann Wolf for an incredible milestone: 40 years of National EMS Certification through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.

For many years, Susann served as the squad leader for Belfield Ambulance, providing steady leadership and dedicated service to her community before Belfield Ambulance merged with Billings County EMS. She continues to be an important part of BCEMS, generously dedicating her time, experience, and knowledge to serving our communities and supporting our team.

Forty years of maintaining national certification represents countless hours of education, training, sacrifice, and service to others. Susann’s commitment has helped shape local EMS and paved the way for those serving today. We are grateful that her service and dedication continue today.

Please join us in congratulating Susann on this remarkable and well-deserved achievement!

Another stretch of hot weather is headed our way, and it's a good reminder to slow down and take care of yourself.

For our local farmers, ranchers, and everyone working outside, we know the work doesn't stop just because the thermometer climbs. Take the time to drink water throughout the day, find some shade when you can, and don't wait until you're thirsty to start hydrating. If you're working with family or neighbors, keep an eye on each other. Heat illness can sneak up faster than you think.

We're also welcoming everyone coming to the Badlands for the Maah Daah Hey Trail Run. Our trails are beautiful, but they can also be unforgiving. Carry more water than you think you'll need, know where aid stations are located, wear appropriate clothing, and don't be afraid to slow your pace or take a break to cool off. There is no shame in turning around if you're not feeling right.

One thing many people don't realize is how remote much of our county is. When someone becomes sick or injured on a trail, in a pasture, or out in the Badlands, it often takes time for emergency crews to reach them. In many locations, ambulances can't drive directly to the patient, and first responders may have to hike or use specialized equipment to access them. That makes preventing heat-related emergencies even more important.

Know the warning signs of heat exhaustion:
• Heavy sweating
• Weakness or fatigue
• Dizziness
• Nausea
• Muscle cramps
• Headache

If someone becomes confused, stops sweating, loses consciousness, or has a very high body temperature, call 911 immediately. Those are signs of heat stroke, and it is a life-threatening emergency.

Whether you're putting up hay, checking cattle, or taking on the Maah Daah Hey Trail, take care of yourself, drink plenty of water, cool off often, and check in on those around you.

Stay safe!
