🕯️ WE REMEMBER. WE SERVE. WE NEVER FORGET. 🇺🇸

Twenty-five years. It still feels like yesterday.

On September 11, 2001, the world watched in horror as 2,977 innocent lives were taken : mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, friends, neighbors. Among them were 343 FDNY firefighters, 60 police officers, and countless EMS heroes who ran up those stairs while everyone else ran down. They didn't hesitate. They didn't ask why. They just answered the call.

For those of us in the fire and rescue service, that day changed everything. It reminded us why we do what we do. It showed us the true meaning of sacrifice, of brotherhood, of love for something greater than ourselves.

Here at Station 10, we carry that lesson with us on every call. When the tones drop at 2 a.m., when the smoke is thick, when someone is having their worst day : we think of those heroes. We remember that courage isn't the absence of fear, it's running toward it anyway.

To the families who lost someone that day: we hold you in our hearts, always. To the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice: thank you. Your legacy lives on in every firehouse, every ambulance, every station across this country ; including ours.

We will never forget. We will always serve. And we will always, always remember.

Training Night: Vehicle Extrication

August 28, 2026 | Melfa Volunteer Fire & Rescue

On Friday, August 28, members of Melfa Volunteer Fire & Rescue joined with members of Tasley Volunteer Fire Company for a hands-on vehicle extrication training at the Melfa Fire Station.

The training was conducted in partnership with TNT Rescue and Fire & Safety Equipment Company, giving our firefighters the opportunity to work with specialized rescue equipment while practicing a variety of techniques used during serious motor vehicle accidents.

Throughout the evening, members worked through multiple extrication scenarios focused on safely and efficiently gaining access to patients trapped inside damaged vehicles. Crews practiced vehicle stabilization, glass management, door and roof removal, creating additional access points, and utilizing hydraulic rescue tools in different configurations.

Vehicle extrication incidents can be complex and time-sensitive, requiring firefighters to work quickly while maintaining the safety of the patient, rescuers, and EMS personnel. Training opportunities like this allow our members to strengthen their skills, learn new techniques, and improve coordination between neighboring departments before those skills are needed during a real emergency.

Melfa Volunteer Fire & Rescue would like to thank TNT Rescue and Fire & Safety Equipment Company for providing this valuable hands-on training, as well as the members of Tasley Volunteer Fire Company for joining us.

Our volunteers remain committed to continuously training, learning, and improving so that when our community calls, we are ready.

Train Together. Respond Together. Serve Together.

Assist Forestry with Air Drops

On August 14, 2026, Melfa Volunteer Fire & Rescue – Station 10 was requested to assist the Virginia Department of Forestry with aerial firefighting operations at the Accomack County Airport.

Tanker 108 (T108) responded to the airport and established a continuous water-supply operation utilizing a nearby fire hydrant. Station 10 personnel supported the operation by supplying water to an aircraft conducting water drops in support of ongoing firefighting efforts.

Throughout the operation, T108 filled the aircraft approximately 24 times, supplying an estimated 15,000 gallons of water for aerial water-drop operations.

Operations such as this demonstrate the importance of cooperation between local fire departments and our state partners. Station 10 is proud to support the Virginia Department of Forestry and provide the personnel, apparatus, and water-supply capabilities needed to protect our communities and natural resources.

We extend our appreciation to all personnel involved for their teamwork and dedication to keeping the Eastern Shore of Virginia safe.
