On April 8th the Shelby County Youth Council held the Youth Voice Summit! It was absolutely incredible and beyond encouraging to meet and hear from fellow youth that demand change. There is so much preparation that goes into these kinds of events, and a big part of the after math and debriefing is accepting that not every part of the Summit could have gone perfectly. We would have loved to have seen more commissioners attend the Summit, as their participation was a large part of enabling youth advocacy in this event, but everything that we heard from the Youth participants are things that we will continue to advocate for to our district commissioners.
We are so grateful for all of the amazing voices that were brought to the surface during the Summit, and truly hope to keep working with you all to make Shelby County a better and more equitable place for Youth.

This is our District 6 Youth Representative, Bella Brewer, one of SCYC’s adult advisers Corrinne McClure, and District 6 Commissioner Charlie Caswell! Yesterday, Bella And Corrinne met with Commissioner Caswell to discuss getting involved in working together to help advocate for, and meet the needs of the Youth in District 6.
We got to learn more about one another’s values in the work that we are doing and the history backing those passions! We hope to continue to grow this partnership into a strong outlet for Youth advocacy.

Yesterday the two SCYC committees got working on curriculum and District engagement planning for our upcoming Youth Summit! Diving headfirst into the new structure of committees has had quite a productive start.
Headlining our weekly SCYC meetings is our meeting agenda which clearly lays out what we want to get done, while leaving room for last minute changes if needed!
