What’s beneath Memphis? Join the conversation about the Memphis Aquifer, the source of drinking water for nearly one million people across the Mid-South.

The University of Memphis Center for Applied Earth Science and Engineering Research (CAESER) is hosting three free community forums where residents can learn about ongoing aquifer research, ask questions and talk directly with researchers about our region’s groundwater.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Whitehaven Community Center forum originally scheduled for October 22 has been postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date. We will provide updated details once a new date is confirmed.

At the 2026 Memphis Housing Summit, Mayor Paul Young joined developers, housing advocates, neighborhood leaders, lenders, and people committed to investing in our city. The room was a powerful reminder that the people who can change the future of Memphis are already here.

Housing is central to building a city where the people who are here want to stay, the people who left want to come home, and new families want to put down roots.

The 2026 State of Memphis Housing report makes the challenge clear. Since 2019, household incomes have increased 20%, while rents have risen 37%, and home values have climbed 81%. Memphis also has a shortage of approximately 28,000 affordable homes for our lowest-income residents, and 79% of our single-family homes are at least 50 years old.

The City has set a goal of helping the community create 10,000 affordable and market-rate housing units by 2030 through new construction and rehabilitation. Since January 2024, 3,339 units have been completed, with another 863 in the pipeline.

That strategy is already at work. In its first year, the Essential Housing Program partnered with 25 emerging developers, awarded 65 vacant lots for redevelopment, and committed more than $1.4 million toward new housing. The City also announced an expansion into Soulsville with a goal of creating 150 to 500 new homes by 2030 and a proposed $7 million investment.

Behind every housing number is a Memphian deciding where to stay. The goal is not simply to build individual homes, but to help entire blocks and neighborhoods come back to life.

We announced the 90-day study period last week, but we are not waiting to take action.

We have seen the traffic and heard the neighborhood concerns in the area around Colossus 2. There will be traffic-calming measures taken and new designated construction truck routes that avoid Holmes Road and North Tulane Road. This should reduce congestion for students and faculty at John P. Freeman Optional School, as we continue to explore other guardrails to protect our community.

More than 450 housing partners, residents, and public officials came together at the 2026 Housing Summit to discuss solutions and expand housing opportunities across Memphis.
The conversation highlighted progress toward the 10,000-home goal, a $7 million investment in Soulsville, the expansion of the Essential Housing program into South Memphis, and strategies to support infill development. The City also launched Memphis Groundbreakers, a new online resource connecting developers with available lots, funding opportunities, and housing news while tracking progress toward the goal.
