In 2025 RESPECT The Haven CDC rebranded as A Better Whitehaven- FB Business Page and embraced the collective impact model. In this role we serve as the backbone support organization facilitating collective impact and community development in Whitehaven.

The problem we found was that community development in Whitehaven was fragmented and uncoordinated, resulting in missed opportunities to maximize the human and economic potential of residents and businesses.

Our solution was to become a member based community organization and work with our member organizations, Whitehaven residents, and community partners to build capacity for collective action in four collective impact goals:

1. Quality Early Learning
2. Living Wage Careers
3. Safe Neighborhoods
4. Stable Housing Market

Home - A Better Whitehaven A Better Whitehaven is a CONNECTOR, CONVENOR, and FACILITATOR of collective impact initiatives in the Whitehaven community of Memphis.

Situation Critical

And here lies the problem. We all know the numbers. 76 percent of MSCS 3rd graders are not reading on grade level. 70 percent of today's prison population does not read pass the 4th grade level. If our Black children cannot read and write all we are doing is continuing the school to prison pipeline.

A Better Whitehaven 's Quality Early Learning Initiative, Whitehaven Reads, aims to increass the number of 3rd grade students exceeding state reading and math standards in Whitehaven. We are looking to form a Whitehaven Early Childhood Collaborative of individuals and organizations already working in Early Childhood Education to help identify those children ages 0 to 5 in Whitehaven in need of enrollment in Early Childhood Education programs and eliminate any barriers those families may face in getting those children enrolled.

The goal of A Better Whitehaven is to increase collective impact to improve the quality of life in Whitehaven across 4 quality of life indicators:

Collective Impact Goals

1. Quality Early Learning- Increase the number of 3rd grade students exceeding state reading and math standards in Whitehaven.

2. Living Wage Careers- Increase the number of families living above the federal poverty line in Whitehaven.

3. Safe Neighborhoods- Decrease the rate of violent crime in Whitehaven.

4. Stable Housing Market- Stabilize the median residential property value in Whitehaven.

To work towards these indicators A Better Whitehaven will catalyze the collective impact of our member organizations and other important stakeholders through these strategic imperatives:

1. Continuous community engagement.
2. Continuous improvement of human services.
3. Attracting public and private investment through community organizing and planning.
4. Building capacity for policy change.

Due to weather we're asking youth interested in our Digital Bootcamp to sign up online. This Bootcamp is open to youth all over the city but A Better Whitehaven will pay a stipend of $20/hour for 20 youth from 38116/38109. All youth must list an educator, pastor, community leader, etc as a Sponsor to be used as a reference. Please share far and wide.
