Join us as Memphis DJ and producer Luke Sexton, aka DJ Redeye, presents his new project, GORENOGRAPHY. We’ll hear the finished work and talk with Luke about the fascinating creative process behind it.
But this isn’t just another listening event. For us, it’s something much more meaningful.
When John King donated his extraordinary collection to help establish the Memphis Listening Lab, he gave us much more than a music library. He gave us a collection that tells the story of recorded sound itself.
Among those thousands of recordings are fascinating artifacts from the early days of radio: sound effects, commercial advertisements, and recordings used to bring stories and imaginary worlds to life over the airwaves.
These records were tools of the trade. And decades later, they’re helping create something entirely new.
Over the course of the past year, Luke explored this remarkable corner of John’s collection, ultimately sampling 101 different records to create GORENOGRAPHY.
Think about that for a moment.
Sounds originally recorded for radio broadcasts and advertisements have found an entirely new life as the building blocks of a contemporary musical work.
And it all happened right here at the Memphis Listening Lab.
This project represents something fundamental to our mission. We believe a music collection should be more than an archive. It should be a living resource where history can be discovered, shared, reinterpreted, and used to inspire new creative work.
John spent a lifetime collecting and preserving these recordings. Luke has taken a small piece of that history and transformed it into something completely unexpected.
And it’s exactly why the word LAB is part of our name.
