"As we have learned in the last year, an unprecedented challenge requires an out-of-the-box approach.

That is why AmeriCorps has joined with MTV Entertainment and more than 1,300 partner organizations in the first ever Mental Health Action Day on Thursday, May 20.

Over the past two decades, su***de rates have risen, particularly among young adults. And the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the already dire crisis, giving way to what many mental health professionals have called the “second pandemic."

Though more people than ever are comfortable discussing mental health, finding effective resources and knowing how to get help remains a challenge. Mental Health Action Day is an open-source movement of brands, organizations, and cultural leaders to drive our society from mental health awareness to mental health action."

A part of my role as VISTA Leader is to plan and facilitate National Days of Service. My favorite memory from service thus far has been having the opportunity to work with our VISTA Members to facilitate a virtual day of service for MLK Day in January. We had a great time writing 200 letters to seniors in Memphis, making 100 face masks, hosting a virtual donation initiative, and connecting with one another! National Days of Service are just one way that VISTA Leaders get to create an impact and connect with the community. AmeriCorps

Hi, my name is Reggie and I serve as the VISTA Leader at the City of Memphis AmeriCorps VISTA program. As a VISTA Leader, I have had the opportunity to support our VISTA Members as they navigate their year of service. I have been inspired by their hearts for service and community conscience action oriented spirits. This last year has had its added obstacles to service but our VISTAs commitment to a culture of service proves that they are truly a special bunch! I want to take this time to celebrate our VISTAs for their perseverance and dedication. Thank you for your service! AmeriCorps

While serving in the Tennessee Army National Guard, I began my AmeriCorps journey in Missouri. When visiting my son in school for our regular lunch dates I would see AmeriCorps members and I became very interested in what their role was in his school. After learning, I just knew I had to jump in! I could be more involved with my son’s school while inspiring the students. I began working with students to help them improve their reading and comprehensive abilities. This is where my love for helping children has grown. Seeing their smiling faces every day really showed I was making a difference in their lives. Having those experiences has really helped me as a VISTA with the City of Memphis program to understand the kind of relationships these children and young teens need to have in their lives. AmeriCorps
