Our Quarter 1 Honors Program is almost here! Join us on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, as we celebrate our scholars’ hard work, growth, and achievements. We’re excited to recognize their accomplishments and cheer them on! 🏆

📍 Location: Cafeteria
🚪 Guest entrance: Second-grade door
⏰ Doors open: 8:20 AM
🎓 First ceremony begins: Promptly at 8:30 AM

Each grade level has its own ceremony time. Please review the attached flyer for your scholar’s schedule.

📱 We’re also going LIVE on our school’s page! Family and friends can tune in and celebrate our scholars from wherever they are.

Hello, PCAES–Hickory Hill Families!

We are excited to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month next week with a fun-filled Spirit Week October 19-23, 2026! We invite all our scholars to participate as we celebrate Hispanic culture, history, and traditions through creativity and school spirit!

Monday 10/19 – Fiesta Day: Wear bright colors and Hispanic attire or accessories.

Tuesday 10/20– Famous Figure Day: Dress like a famous Hispanic figure.

Wednesday 10/21 – Sports Jersey Day: Wear a jersey representing your favorite Hispanic player or team.

Thursday 10/22– Latin Music Day: Dress like a famous Latin music artist.

Friday 10/23 – Flag Friday: Wear the colors of your assigned country's flag.

We can't wait to see our scholars show off their creativity while learning about and celebrating the richness and diversity of Hispanic culture!

Today, we are recognizing Ildaura Murillo-Rohde! She saw a need and helped build a solution. Born in Panama, the nurse and educator helped found the National Association of Hispanic Nurses in 1975 to support nurses and improve care for Hispanic communities.

Her story shows our scholars that leadership can grow from caring about people and noticing what is missing. One person can help create opportunities for many others.

¡Hoy reconocemos a Ildaura Murillo-Rohde! Ella vio una necesidad y ayudó a crear una solución. Nació en Panamá y fue enfermera y educadora. En 1975 ayudó a fundar la Asociación Nacional de Enfermeras y Enfermeros Hispanos para apoyar a estos profesionales y mejorar la atención de las comunidades hispanas.

Su historia muestra a nuestros estudiantes que el liderazgo puede nacer del cuidado de los demás y de reconocer lo que hace falta. Una persona puede abrir oportunidades para muchas más.

Today, we honor the voice of Julia de Burgos! She used poetry to speak with a strong, unforgettable voice. The Puerto Rican poet wrote about freedom, identity, and women’s lives. Her words continue to connect with readers, and she was honored on a U.S. postage stamp in 2010.

Julia’s story invites our scholars to discover the power of their own words. A poem, a story, or even one honest sentence can help others understand who we are.

¡Hoy honramos la voz de Julia de Burgos! Ella usó la poesía para expresarse con una voz fuerte e inolvidable. La poeta puertorriqueña escribió sobre la libertad, la identidad y la vida de las mujeres. Sus palabras siguen llegando a los lectores y, en 2010, fue honrada en una estampilla postal de Estados Unidos.

Today's spotlight belongs to Antonia Pantoja! She believed young people could help shape their own futures. Born in Puerto Rico, she founded ASPIRA in 1961 to support Latino youth through education and leadership opportunities.

Antonia’s story is a celebration of what happens when adults invest in students’ voices and dreams. Our scholars do not have to wait until they grow up to begin leading and helping their communities.

¡La figura destacada de hoy es Antonia Pantoja! Ella creía que los jóvenes podían construir su propio futuro. Nació en Puerto Rico y fundó ASPIRA en 1961 para apoyar a la juventud latina mediante oportunidades de educación y liderazgo.

Su historia celebra lo que sucede cuando los adultos apoyan las voces y los sueños de los estudiantes. Nuestros jóvenes no tienen que esperar a ser mayores para empezar a liderar y ayudar a sus comunidades.

Parent Parents,

On Friday, October 30th, PCAES-HH will host our annual Fall Festival. One of the activities we have is Trunk and Treat. We are asking for volunteers to decorate their trunks and pass out STORE BOUGHT treats ONLY to our scholars as they walk through.

Such as: candy, chips, pencils, juices, snack cakes (no nuts of any kind)

This event is FREE for all scholars K-5 and held during the school day and we host Trunk and Treat for 2 hours. 9am-11am. We will take as many volunteers as we can get!

Please use the link sign up for a block or the entire time! We will have a meeting closer to the date to discuss the details and logistics for the day. We will reach out via email. We appreciate your partnership!

Today, we would like to recognize Luisa Moreno! She helped workers discover the strength of joining together. Born in Guatemala, she organized people across the United States to seek better pay and safer conditions. She also helped bring Spanish-speaking communities together to advocate for civil rights.

Her story teaches our scholars that change can begin when people listen to one another, find a shared goal, and speak up together.

¡Hoy queremos reconocer a Luisa Moreno! Ella ayudó a los trabajadores a descubrir la fuerza de unirse. Nació en Guatemala y organizó a personas en Estados Unidos para buscar mejores salarios y condiciones laborales. Today, we celebrate historian Arturo Schomburg! He knew that history is richer when more voices are included. The Afro-Puerto Rican historian collected books, documents, and art that preserved Black history. His collection grew into an important research resource in New York.

His work reminds our scholars to ask whose stories are missing and to value the histories families and communities share. Every story deserves the chance to be remembered.

¡Hoy celebramos al historiador Arturo Schomburg! Él sabía que la historia es más completa cuando incluye más voces. Este historiador afropuertorriqueño reunió libros, documentos y obras de arte que conservaron la historia de la población negra. Su colección llegó a ser un importante recurso de investigación en Nueva York.

Today, we are sharing the story of Ralph Lazo! He chose to stand with his friends. As a Mexican American teenager during World War II, he voluntarily went to Manzanar when his Japanese American friends were forced there under an unjust government policy.

Ralph’s choice gives our scholars a powerful question: What can we do when a friend is treated unfairly? His story shows that friendship and courage can mean showing up, even when it is difficult.

¡Hoy compartimos la historia de Ralph Lazo! Él decidió acompañar a sus amigos. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, este adolescente mexicoestadounidense fue voluntariamente a Manzanar cuando sus amigos japoneses estadounidenses fueron enviados allí por una política injusta del gobierno.

Su decisión plantea a nuestros estudiantes una pregunta poderosa: ¿Qué podemos hacer cuando tratan injustamente a un amigo? Su historia nos muestra que la amistad y el valor también significan estar presentes cuando es difícil.
