💙 💛 In honor of Down Syndrome Awareness Month, Pitolua Alesana-Sefo, a Program Coordinator in Washington, shared the following:
"Supporting someone with Down syndrome taught me so much. It wasn't always an easy job, but it was fun and rewarding.
I learned that people with Down syndrome experience happiness and other emotions, just like everyone else. Each person is different, and not everyone with Down syndrome behaves or learns the same way. We should be patient, recognize their abilities, give them opportunities to do things independently when they can and above all, respect their feelings.
The person I supported would always look forward to seeing me come on shift, and that meant so much to me. It made me feel like I was doing something right.
Sometimes, the greatest reward in caregiving isn't recognition or a “thank you;” It's knowing that your presence makes someone feel safe, happy and cared for. Showing up for them every day was one of the best feelings ever."
Thank you for sharing, Pitolua. We are so grateful to be given the incredible privilege to respect and respond to the choices of each person we support!
