🚔 CITIZENS POLICE ACADEMY – WEEK 3! 🚁

We've been so busy with community events lately that we've fallen a little behind on sharing photos from our Citizens Police Academy — but we're catching up! And Week 3 was packed with some pretty exciting behind-the-scenes experiences!

🚁 First Up – The Mentor Police Drone Team!

Officer Heramb and Officer Childs kicked off the evening by giving our cadets an inside look at the incredible capabilities of the Mentor Police Drone Team. They explained how drones have become a valuable tool in modern law enforcement, assisting officers with search operations, accident investigations, and monitoring scenes to help keep both officers and the public safe.

From providing an aerial view of an incident to helping locate missing individuals, our cadets learned how this technology allows officers to see situations from an entirely different perspective and make more informed decisions.

🚨 Next Up – The Mentor SWAT Team!

Lieutenant Smelcer, Officer Epling, and Officer Magnuson took things to the next level with an inside look at the Mentor Police SWAT Team!

Cadets learned about the specialized training, equipment, and tactics used by SWAT officers when responding to high-risk situations. The presentation highlighted the importance of teamwork, communication, preparation, and the ability to make critical decisions under pressure.

Our cadets also gained a better understanding of the dedication and countless hours of training that go into being part of these specialized units. While the equipment and technology are impressive, it's the people behind them — and their commitment to protecting our community — that truly make the difference.

One of the best parts of Citizens Police Academy is giving participants an opportunity to see the many different responsibilities of our officers beyond what they typically see during a patrol shift. Each week offers a new perspective on the training, technology, and teamwork involved in keeping our community safe.

We're excited to spotlight Hadley Maheu from Hopkins Elementary School, whose creative poster earned her not only the top spot at Hopkins Elementary, but also the Grand Prize in our 3rd Grade Seat Belt Safety Poster Contest among all participating schools!

Hadley's poster shares a simple but powerful message: "Buckle Up Please. You Will Be Safe!"

Sometimes the most important safety reminders come from our youngest community members! Hadley's artwork reminds us that wearing a seat belt is one of the easiest and most important things we can do to protect ourselves every time we get into a vehicle.

Congratulations, Hadley, on your outstanding achievement! Thank you for using your creativity to help spread such an important lifesaving message. We're so proud of you!

Stop by and learn how to properly install and use your child's car seat or booster seat. You'll have the opportunity to:

✅ Check that your car seat is installed correctly.
✅ Make sure your child is using the appropriate seat for their age, height, and weight.
✅ Learn when it's time to transition to the next type of car seat or booster.
✅ Get answers to your child passenger safety questions.

Remember, car seat safety doesn't stop after the first installation! As children grow, their safety needs change. Taking a few minutes to have your child's seat checked can make a difference when it matters most.

Join Officer Dan Radigan at the Mentor Public Library this coming Thursday for Story Time!

Then, be sure to come back every third Thursday of the month at 11:00 AM, when Officer Dan or another member of the Mentor Police Department will stop by to read a safety-related story, share fun activities, and help kids learn more about their police department.

It’s a great opportunity for our youngest community members to get to know our officers in a fun and friendly setting while learning important safety lessons along the way!

🎟️ And there’s a fun bonus! Each time you attend, you’ll receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win a pizza lunch with Officer Dan and Fireman Dan in December 2026! 🍕🚓🚒

We had a wonderful time visiting the little learners at Garfield Integrated Preschool yesterday! Officer Radigan spent time with the children talking about important safety lessons in a fun, interactive, and age-appropriate way.

The kids learned about when to call 911, identifying safe adults they can turn to for help, and what to do if they ever come across a gun — including the importance of never touching it, walking away, and telling a trusted adult right away.

Officer Radigan also took some time to address something that can be a real concern for young children — being afraid of the police. Sometimes children are told that if they misbehave, the police will come and take them to jail. While it may be said to encourage good behavior, it can unintentionally create fear and confusion about law enforcement.

To help ease those worries, Officer Radigan demonstrated how his handcuffs don't even fit little wrists! The children got a good laugh while learning an important message: Police officers are their friends and are here to help, not someone they should be afraid of.

We want children to feel comfortable approaching an officer if they're lost, scared, or need help. Building that trust at a young age can make all the difference when a child faces a real emergency.

Of course, the highlight of the visit was heading outside to check out the police cruiser! The kids loved climbing inside, exploring the vehicle, and especially seeing the flashing lights and hearing the sirens!

A big thank-you to Garfield Integrated Preschool for welcoming us! We loved all the smiles, questions, and excitement. Visits like these are a wonderful reminder that community policing starts with our youngest residents!

The Mentor Police Department's Crime Prevention Unit has enjoyed making regular visits to Vitalia Senior Living every other month, spending time with residents, sharing information, and building friendships along the way!

During our last visit, we hosted a Coffee with a Cop event, where residents had the opportunity to ask questions, share concerns, and enjoy an open discussion about law enforcement and community safety.

We learned that several residents share a special interest in criminal investigations and even have a group that meets weekly to work through fictional cold case scenarios, examining clues and trying to solve the cases.

With their interest in investigative work, residents asked if we could return and share a real-life case investigated by the Mentor Police Department.

For this visit, we presented the Ann McSween homicide case, providing an overview of the investigation, the challenges investigators faced, and the dedicated work that went into bringing the case through the criminal justice system.

While the presentation offered a unique look into the investigative process, it also served as a reminder that behind every case is a real person, a family, and a community forever impacted by tragedy. We approached the discussion with respect for Ann McSween and those who knew and loved her.

Following the presentation, a couple of residents invited us to stay a little longer to enjoy some pop and conversation. Of course, we couldn't pass up the invitation! 🥤 It was a wonderful opportunity to relax, share a few stories, and get to know each other a little better. Sometimes, it's those simple moments and personal connections that make these visits so special!

We appreciate the residents' thoughtful questions, genuine interest, and warm hospitality. These visits are about more than sharing information — they're about building relationships, creating meaningful conversations, and staying connected with members of our community.
