Some people hunt w**e cap mushrooms to make a tasty meal out of them, but underground, w**e cap mushrooms hunt parasitic soil roundworms (nematodes)! These mushrooms are carnivorous and produce microscopic spike structures that pierce the outer shells of nematodes and digest them. W**e caps are also known as the โ€œGarden Giantโ€ as they can grow over 8 inches in diameter and weigh up to 5 pounds! When they are young, w**e cap mushrooms are a deep, striking red-w**e color. As they age and grow larger, they fade to a golden yellow. Due to their vast underground networks, w**e cap mushrooms help to filter pollutants and build soil health.

โ€” Kristin Thiel

Years ago, Kristin planted thousands of acorns alongside a group of Boy Scouts at Mequon Nature Preserve. Today, those acorns have grown into trees, creating a corridor between two forested areas of the preserve.

It's a beautiful example of the lasting impact of her nearly 20 years of dedication to restoring our land.
We're celebrating Kristin as the recipient of Milwaukee Magazine's 2026 Groundbreaker Betty Award.

Join us in congratulating her on this well-deserved recognition! ๐Ÿ’š

This blue-purple, nonnative, naturalized w**d is called Chicory, Cichorium intybus. It blooms throughout the summer and into early fall. In the morning, the flowers will open up and close up later in the day. You can commonly find it along roadsides, railroads, disturbed sites, pastures, and abandoned fields. It belongs to the aster family and has been cultivated and used medicinally for centuries for its edible leaves, buds, and roots. The roots were once brewed to make what can be considered โ€œpoor man's coffeeโ€. It grows best in full sun in well-drained soils. Chicory is also called Blue sailors, Succory, Coffeew**d, and Italian dandelion.

The Pileated Woodpecker, Dryocopus pileatus, is the largest woodpecker in North America. They live in forests and will look for food in dead trees. They feed mainly on ants and other insects, but will also eat nuts and fruit. The rectangular holes they make in the trees creates homes for many different animals such as owls, ducks, and bats. They might visit your bird feeder if you leave some suet out! Males are black with white and red stripes on their face, a red crest, and white under their wings. Females look similar to males but lack the red stripe on their face. Their bill is almost as long as their head! You might spot or hear this majestic bird in the MNP woodlots!

The gorgeous orange, red, and yellow coloring you see on some of our maple trees comes from pigments called carotenoids (including carotene and xanthophyll). Carotenoids are also present in the leaves throughout spring and summer, but green pigments from chlorophyll are more visible/dominant during those seasons. In fall, green pigments break down due to cooler temperatures and shorter days, revealing bright fall colors from carotene and xanthophyll. Carotene is the same pigment that is found in another fall favorite, pumpkins! Make sure to visit MNP during the fall season to see the changing foliage!
