October is Crime Prevention Month, which is a great time to remind the community to be aware of scam calls, texts, and email.

Scammers can get creative in going after your hard-earned money, so it's important to remain vigilant to keep from becoming a victim. They may call, text, or email pretending to be your bank, a government agency, or even someone you know. Caller ID can be faked, and urgent demands are a warning sign.

If a message asks for money, account information, passwords, or a verification code, immediately stop and do not click or respond. Don’t use a link or phone number in the message. Contact the person or organization using a number or website you find independently. Be especially cautious of demands for payment by gift card, cryptocurrency, or wire transfer. You can hang up and check the claim before taking action.

REMINDER: Traffic will be impacted along Gallagher Hill Road beginning today due to construction to replace a key section of the Island’s main water pipeline.

For the first few weeks of work, traffic will be reduced to one uphill (southbound) lane on Gallagher Hill Road, while two-way traffic will remain open on SE 36th Street. Signed detours will direct drivers heading eastbound down Mercerwood Drive.

Beginning in early November, the downhill lane of Gallagher Hill Road will close from SE 40th St to 93rd Ave SE.

Roadway impacts are expected to last up to six months.

The City and Mercer Island School District are coordinating to keep travel safe during construction. Expect heavier traffic along SE 40th Street and Mercerwood Drive during school drop-off and pick-up. Drivers should allow extra time and watch for students. Students should continue using marked crosswalks. School buses will continue running, though schedules may be adjusted.

With October being Crime Prevention Month, the Mercer Island Police Department would like to share tips throughout the month to help protect you and your property.

This week, the focus is on preventing vehicle prowls. These crimes can happen at any time, and at any place. Lock your vehicle and close the windows every time you park, even for a quick stop. Take bags, electronics, garage door openers, spare keys, and personal documents with you.

If you need to leave something in your vehicle, place it in the trunk, glove box, or other area that is out of sight before you arrive at your destination. When possible, park in a well-lit area. Get more tips on MIPD's Crime Prevention webpage: https://www.mercerisland.gov/police/page/do-it-yourself-crime-prevention

The City of Mercer Island is replacing a key section of the Island’s main water pipeline with a stronger and more reliable pipeline that will help provide safe drinking water to the community for years to come.

The first phase of construction will begin along Gallagher Hill Road, with crews mobilizing on Monday, Oct. 5, and work beginning on Monday, Oct. 12. During this phase, traffic will be reduced to one uphill (southbound) lane on Gallagher Hill Road, while two-way traffic will remain open on SE 36th Street. Signed detours will direct drivers heading eastbound down Mercerwood Drive.

The City and Mercer Island School District are coordinating to keep travel safe during construction. Students should continue using marked crosswalks. School buses will continue running, though schedules may be adjusted.

As boating season comes to a close, the Mercer Island Police Department (MIPD) reminds Islanders that the Mercer Island Municipal Code (MICC) prohibits storage of boat trailers (or any vehicle) on any Right of Way (ROW). This includes trailers with or without boats.

Specifically, MICC 10.36.229 prohibits the parking of oversized vehicles on city streets or the ROW, and MICC 10.36.225 prohibits parking on city streets or in the ROW for longer than 72 hours. The ROW typically extends several feet beyond the edge of the pavement or curb and also includes sidewalks, planting strips, unpaved margins, and drainage areas.

MIPD also reminds residents and visitors that all vehicles must have current license plates and tabs (MICC 10.14.020). Any vehicles not in compliance are subject to citation. For more information about boat and trailer parking, visit MIPD’s FAQ page: https://www.mercerisland.gov/police/page/boat-trailer-parking-regulations

TRAVEL ADVISORY: Mercer Island drivers should prepare for major I-90 Eastbound delays from 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18, to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20, as WSDOT completes bridge repairs over Richards Road in Bellevue.

Lane reductions start on Mercer Island: the left HOV lane will close at Island Crest Way, followed by an additional left lane east of East Mercer Way. Traffic will taper to a single open right lane near Richards Road (three lanes will be closed).

Heavy congestion is expected. Drivers heading toward Bellevue or Snoqualmie Pass should allow extra travel time, consider alternate routes like SR 520, and exercise caution. More info: https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/WADOT/bulletins/42aa4f8
