Fire Update:

Hydra Fire, Bosque County
1800 Update
Saturday, September 19th 2026
Size: 933ac
Containment: 52%
Structures lost: Unknown
Cause: Unknown/Under Investigation
Location: Approximately 2 miles south of Meridian, 1 mile west of HWY6

Situational Update:
Acreage was reduced to 933 acres due to better mapping. Containment increased to 52%.
Today’s focus has been on improving existing containment lines. Engines worked all sides of the fire to extinguish hotspots. Two hand crews, consisting of approximately 20 members each, will arrive mid-day tomorrow. These crews will build direct hand line, targeting hot spots on hillsides and in rough terrain. Engines will continue to extinguish heat near containment lines. Interior pockets of fuel will continue to burn within the fire perimeter throughout the evening. Smoke may be visible throughout the rest of the day. Texas Parks and Wildlife will fly a drone mission this evening to map remaining heat.
Bosque River Valley brings a unique set of problems for firefighters to contend with. The west side of the fire consists of rolling hills that are relatively easy to navigate. The eastern edge of the fire is burning in steep slopes and juniper filled canyons. These features make accessing and finding heat signatures difficult, allowing debris to smolder before crews can find and extinguish.

Wildfire Information:

We have gotten several questions about what “contained” means as far as percentage. It is not a representation of the fire itself or how much has been put out. Here is some information on it…

Fire managers often use the terms “contained” and “controlled” when communicating about wildland fire. These terms may sound similar but they do represent different stages of fire response.

Contained: The measure of containment line, expressed as a percentage, around a wildfire. It is a measure of line that has been physically constructed as well as the confidence that the line will hold when tested by winds and fire will not cross that section. In Texas, we often use heavy equipment such as bulldozers and road graders, along with tactical firing operations and handline, to create containment line.

Controlled: Control of a fire means that containment lines have been completed, hot spots and any potential threats to the line have been mitigated, and containment lines are expected to hold.

Containment and control of a wildfire may take several days or weeks to complete. Wildfire perimeters can be miles long, and firefighters ensure that each section of line will hold. Even when a wildfire is 100% contained and controlled, this does not mean that the fire is out as smoke and interior vegetation may continue to burn. A wildfire is declared out when there is no smoke or fire activity.

We are happy to report that there are no significant changes at this time — and in this case, no change is a great report.

Fire lines continue to hold, and crews remain on scene monitoring conditions and making steady progress.

Unless there is a significant change overnight, our next fire update will be posted tomorrow morning.

Thank you again to all of the firefighters, emergency personnel, supporting agencies, and community members who continue to work together and support one another.

Stay safe, Bosque County!

FIRE UPDATE 09-18-2026 @ 1400hrs

There has been no significant change in the fire’s size or containment. The fire remains at approximately 1,100 acres and 35% contained.

Throughout the afternoon and evening, residents may notice pockets of smoke periodically billowing from within the fire area. This is expected as interior portions of the burn area continue to burn themselves out.

The established fire lines continue to hold, and crews are steadily making progress. Suppression efforts are moving more slowly than usual due to the rugged terrain and difficult topography in the area where the fire is burning.

We will continue to provide updates as additional information becomes available.

We also want to take a moment to say how incredibly grateful we are for this community. The outpouring of support has been nothing short of amazing.

We are equally thankful for the local, regional, and state resources that have stepped up to assist during this incident. The cooperation, hard work, and support shown throughout this response have been tremendous.

To each and every person reading this: THANK YOU, on behalf of Bosque County!
