Happy 88th Birthday to the center piece of our association!

On July 25, 1938, the fledgling Merrimack Fire Department received its first brand-new piece of fire apparatus—a custom-built X50 International Harvester / Maxim D35 fire engine.

This remarkable truck featured a two-man cab, a 150-gallon water tank, and a 500 GPM rotary gear pump. Proudly known as the “Pride of the Department,” it served at all of Merrimack’s fire stations, including the original barn/workshop Central Station and the original Reeds Ferry Fire Station on Elm Street.

After decades of dedicated service, the truck was retired from active duty and sold to the Merrimack Fire Fighters Association on August 8, 1980.

Between 2008 and 2010, the engine underwent a major restoration led by Jim Bailey, a Merrimack Call Fire Fighter and owner of Bailey’s Towing and Autobody. The restoration included a complete repaint and a full pump rebuild by Master Fire Fighter Wayne Perkins, owner of W.D. Perkins Fire Pump Specialists.

Today, this historic engine continues to serve the community as a cherished showpiece. It can be seen proudly displayed at local parades, the annual fire department open house, and other community events, honoring the departments legacy and the generations of fire fighters it has served.
