Mesa MMIP Day of Action — Saturday, May 2 from 1–3 pm at Brick Road Coffee
LD9 Democrats invite you to a community conversation focused on creating a safer Mesa for our historically marginalized communities. Together, we’ll look at the factors that contribute to Indigenous American, Black, Immigrant, Disabled, and LGBTQ+ people going missing and murdered at disproportionately high rates — and how we can strengthen the networks that keep our communities safe.
We’ll also share updates on policies that have passed and what’s currently moving through the Arizona Legislature.
This is a space for learning, connection, and collective action.
We hope you’ll join us.

At our last meeting, we heard from Sonia Almaraz, who has been leading the fight for justice for her partner, Arbella Rodríguez Marquez, known as Yari.
Yari, a legal resident, suffers from chronic lymphocytic leukemia and was detained by ICE just over a year ago. She has been held at Eloy since, and her health is rapidly deteriorating. Despite ongoing efforts by Sonia and advocates like Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari, Trans Q***r Pueblo, and others, Yari has been denied treatment for the last year.
Just last week, Emmanuel Damas was killed by medical neglect, dying of a preventable tooth infection in ICE captivity.
The 8th amendment of the constitution of the United States protects against cruel and unusual punishment. The supreme court has consistently upheld that deliberate indifference to medical needs violates this important constitutional right.
How you can help:
1) Visit Trans Q***r Pueblo's site, tqpueblo.org , and sign the petition for Yari’s release sponsored by Mass Liberation AZ (masslibaz.org)
2) Consider donating to Sonia to assist in legal expenses while she battles for Yari’s release. Please include “Donation for Yari” in the comments.

Please join us in affirming those principles laid out in the constitution, and help advocate for Yari’s release.
