From his role as a five-star general in World War II to America's 34th president throughout much of the 1950s, Dwight David Eisenhower left a profound global impact in the 20th century. He was born on this date, October 14, in 1890. Nicknamed Ike during childhood, Eisenhower was a multifaceted man: a hobbyist painter, a barbecue chef praised at cookouts, steely military commander, media-savvy politician, an individual who was willing to subordinate personal pride to advance a mission. Science fiction writer Frank Herbert, best known as the author of the 'Dune' series, was born on this date in 1920. 'Dune,' published in 1965, is one of the best-selling science fiction novels of all time and spawned five sequels. Herbert began researching 'Dune' in 1959. He was able to devote himself wholeheartedly to his writing career because his wife returned to work full-time as an advertising writer for department stores, becoming their breadwinner during the 1960s. 'Dune' took six years of research and writing to complete, and was much longer than other commercial science fiction of the time. Herbert's environmental work in his home state of Oregon formed the basis of the speculative ecological work, which parallels real-world efforts and tactics of sand dune management. We invite you to dive into the creative output of Herbert, who wrote 22 novels in total, along with several short story collections and non-fiction works: https://shorturl.at/P6eFv
