Delay pushes I-24 Ohio River bridge opening to November

On Tuesday, Ben Wills โ€” project implementation engineer for the Illinois Department of Transportation District 9 โ€” said that construction on the I-24 Ohio River Bridge has been delayed.

Mason Watkins
On Tuesday, Ben Wills โ€” project implementation engineer for the Illinois Department of Transportation District 9 โ€” shared a construction update on the bridge; weather permitting, crews are set to complete the remaining deck pours this week, then finish painting underneath the bridge. Afterward, they plan to smooth out the bridgeโ€™s surface before opening the lanes.

โ€œIt is major bridge rehabilitation; it's a big bridge,โ€ Wills said. โ€œThere are always unexpected things, and we have to take care of all the issues โ€” because you don't want us back out there, and we don't want to get back out there. So, now is the time that we have to deal with them.โ€

The entire project is projected to be finished by September of 2027, with Wills estimating that it is currently two-thirds of the way complete. Additionally, a pause in the construction is coming soon, offering both workers and drivers a break from the bridge's work zone.

Metropolis, IL ~ An arrest has been in the October 1st hit and run crash that left a 14 year old girl with injuries. Kayla S. Forthman, 39, of rural Metropolis was charged with Leaving the scene of an injury crash (Class 4 Felony), Failure to give aid or information, and Failure to yield from a stop intersection. Whether it's a house fire, severe weather, a power outage, or another emergency, preparedness isn't about expecting the worst. It's about being ready to protect the people who matter most.

Preparedness doesn't happen all at once. It happens one decision at a time.

Throughout September, IESMA will share practical ideas that individuals, families, employers, and communities can use to become more prepared. Each post will include one simple action you can complete the same day. Small steps taken consistently can make a significant difference when an emergency occurs.

Prepared communities begin with prepared people.
