Serving the needs of our students and the greater community is a top priority for the Meyersdale Area School District. In response to a growing need and a desire to support our local resources and community programs, the District has launched a food drive to benefit the local food pantry. Spearheaded by the MAHS Chapter of National Honor Society, this food drive is supported by the Student Council and the Meyersdale Area Education Association.
Now through November 19th, students are invited to bring non-perishable items that will be donated directly to our local food pantry, the Casselman Valley Helpers.
During the November food drive at MASD, each building has a focused group of items identified as a need by the food pantry. The homerooms bringing the most items in each building will be awarded a fun prize!
Elementary students, staff and faculty are asked to bring canned goods, such as vegetables, cans of fruit, canned meat or soup. Those associated with the Middle School are asked to donate pasta items, such as spaghetti noodles, spaghetti sauce, macaroni and cheese, cereal, oatmeal and Pop-Tarts. High School students, staff and faculty are asked to donate hygiene items such as toilet paper, soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes.
In addition, a drive-through food drive event will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, November 15th in the High School parking lot to allow members of the community to join and support this important effort.
“With the government not passing a budget, there are many families who have unmet needs. We are striving to provide as much support as possible for our community to help meet needs and ease a small part of the burden families are facing. These students recognized the needs of their community and took the lead to ensure they could help out during difficult times,” explained Bree Yoder, MASD Social worker and NHS Advisor.
There are several community resources that can offer assistance during these challenging times. The Casselman Valley Helpers Food Pantry is open Friday mornings and their website offers details on documentation requirements. The Somerset County Mobile Food Bank will have a distribution in Meyersdale on Tuesday, November 18th. Please see scmfb.org for additional details on this distribution. Help is available for selected home utilities through each major supplier. LIHEAP (help with heating costs) has been postponed until early December, but applications are available for that program through the COMPASS website. For additional assistance or information, please reach out to Bree Yoder, School Social Worker, via email: [email protected]
Mister Rogers famously said, “Being kind means responding to the needs of others—and people can be kind, no matter how old or young we are.” Please consider helping us in our efforts to help our neighbors.

The Casselman Valley Helpers Community Food Pantry would like to thank the Diehl's Ford Sales for thinking of our food bank. This will definitely help our clients in the Salisbury & Meyersdale school districts.
I want to start by saying thank you to the volunteers, pastors, clients, and helpers of the Casselman Valley Helpers Community Food Pantry.
After much thought, processing, and consideration, I have decided that my time as Director of the CVH Food Pantry has come to an end. This is not a decision I made lightly; but stepping back is what is best for myself, as well as the pantry.
I value the experiences I’ve had as Director over the past 10 years, working alongside some very kindhearted people. I look forward to a smooth transition, and hope to have a Friday or two off that I can come back and help.
Thank you all,
Ashley
