Inter-Tribal WIC A supplemental nutrition program providing nutrition education and breastfeeding support to families in NE Oklahoma, SW Missouri and SE Kansas.

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is a nutritional program for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, postpartum mothers, infants and children up to the age of five. These are critical times for growth and development, when proper nutrition is especially important in order to prevent health problems. The purpose of WIC is to provide supplemental foods high in protein, vitamins, and minerals (particularly vitamin C and iron to prevent anemia); which will help increase birth weight of infants and to permit maximum mental and physical development. These foods have been carefully selected and are individually prescribed to meet the participant’s nutrition needs. WIC also refers participants to health and social service programs and gives nutrition education lessons on good eating habits to help the ITC WIC Program build healthy families through good nutrition. ITC WIC nutrition education goals are to assist the participant who is at nutritional risk to achieve a positive change in food eating habits resulting in an improved health status and to prevent nutrition related problems. Infants whose mothers participate in WIC weigh more when they are born and have fewer health problems than infants whose mothers did not participate. Children who participate in WIC are less likely to have anemia than children who don’t participate. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) funds WIC, which is run by the Inter-Tribal Council of Oklahoma. The ITC WIC Program is administered at the local clinic level by ITC WIC paraprofessionals located at the Inter-Tribal Council, Inc. Eligibility for the ITC WIC Program is based on income and nutritional risk. Applicants for the program must meet income criteria, set by the USDA, and/or be determined a nutritional risk by a health care professional. Risk criteria include anemia, poor growth, medical conditions related to nutrition, low birth weight, and inadequate dietary intake. WIC is different from food stamps because participants can only buy the types and quantities of foods shown on their food instrument benefit or their cash value benefit. They can’t buy things like soda pop, candy or potato chips. Also, WIC participants can only use their food instrument benefits or their cash value benefit at stores that have a signed Vendor Agreement with the ITC WIC Program. The vendor and cashiers who sell the ITC WIC authorized foods are essential because they help to improve the nutritional status of a member of their community.

🧼💧 Happy Global Handwashing Day! 🌎👐

Clean hands help protect you and your family from germs! 💙 This Global Handwashing Day, let’s remember that proper handwashing is one of the easiest and most effective ways to help prevent the spread of germs and keep our little ones healthy.

🫧 When should you wash your hands?
✔️ Before preparing or eating food
✔️ Before feeding your baby or child
✔️ After using the restroom or changing a diaper
✔️ After coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose
✔️ After playing outside or touching pets
✔️ Whenever your hands look or feel dirty

🧼 How to wash your hands properly:
1️⃣ Wet your hands with clean, running water.
2️⃣ Apply soap and scrub your palms, the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
3️⃣ Scrub for at least 20 seconds — sing “Happy Birthday” twice! 🎶
4️⃣ Rinse well under clean, running water.
5️⃣ Dry your hands with a clean towel or air dryer.

👶 Parents and caregivers, help your little ones build healthy handwashing habits early! Every wash makes a difference.

💙 Let’s work together to keep our families healthy and help protect against germs — one wash at a time!

🎃🌱Happy National Pumpkin Seed Day!🌱🎃

Did you know your WIC benefits can help bring pumpkin fun to the table? WIC families can use their Cash Value Benefits (CVB) to purchase eligible fresh pumpkins—just remember that decorative or painted pumpkins are not WIC-eligible.

💪 Magnesium – supports muscles, nerves, and many processes in the body
🩸 Iron – helps carry oxygen in the blood
🛡️ Zinc – supports the immune system and helps with growth and development
🌟 Vitamin E – an antioxidant that helps protect cells
🥜 Plus, pumpkin seeds provide protein, fiber, and healthy fats!

Halloween tip: When your family carves a pumpkin this year, scoop out the seeds, rinse them, season them, and roast them for a delicious way to make the most of your pumpkin. 🎃✨

🍼 Paced Bottle Feeding: Keep Baby Safe & Comfortable! 💕

When giving your baby a bottle, paced bottle feeding can help baby stay in control of the feeding and recognize when they need a break.

Remember these important safety tips:

👶 Always hold your baby while giving a bottle. Never prop a bottle or leave baby alone with a bottle.

⬆️ Keep baby upright in your arms. Baby should not be fed while lying flat on their back.

⏸️ Let baby take breaks. Pause during the feeding and watch for baby’s cues. If baby turns away, stops sucking, or seems full, give them a break.

💗 Follow baby’s cues and allow baby to decide how much and how quickly they eat.

Safe, responsive feeding helps make bottle feeding a positive experience for both you and your baby! 🌟

September is Newborn Screening Awareness Month, and we’re celebrating the simple test that saves thousands of lives every single year.

It’s a heel prick that checks for more than 30 serious but treatable health conditions. This screening gives babies the best chance at a healthy start by catching issues before symptoms even appear.
