ππ₯ Fall Nights, Fire Pits & Fire Safety! π₯π
There's nothing quite like a crisp fall evening in Bowleys Quarters spent around a backyard fire pit with family and friends! But before you grab the marshmallows and pull up a chair, let's talk about keeping those cozy nights safe.
π Did you know Baltimore County has specific regulations for outdoor fires?
Whether you're enjoying a small backyard fire pit or planning a larger bonfire, it's important to know the rules!
π Know Your Local Regulations!
π₯ Small Recreational Fires: Baltimore County generally does not require a burning permit for recreational fires no larger than 3 feet in diameter, provided all applicable safety requirements are followed.
π Adult Supervision: An adult age 18 or older must remain in direct view of the fire and supervise it until it is completely extinguished.
π Bonfires & Open Burning: Larger bonfires and other types of open burning may require permits and must meet additional county and state regulations.
π« Location Restrictions: Bonfires are prohibited inside I-695. Permitted open burning outside the Beltway is subject to additional location, material, and seasonal restrictions.
β οΈ Temporary Restrictions: Fire officials may prohibit outdoor fires when weather or other conditions create an increased fire hazard.
β€οΈ Keep Your Fire Pit Safe!
π‘ Choose a Safe Location: Keep your fire pit away from homes, sheds, fences, overhanging branches, and other combustible materials. Follow applicable setback requirements and manufacturer instructions.
π Clear the Area: Remove dry leaves, decorations, and anything else that could catch fire.
πͺ΅ Burn Responsibly: Use appropriate dry, seasoned firewood. Never burn trash, treated lumber, plastics, or other prohibited materials.
π« Skip the Accelerants: Never use gasoline or other flammable liquids to start or strengthen a fire.
π§ Be Prepared: Keep a garden hose or other appropriate extinguishing equipment nearby.
π₯ Put It Out Completely: Never leave the area until the fire is fully extinguished and the ashes are cool.
π¨ Watch the Weather: Avoid outdoor fires during windy or unusually dry conditions, and check for temporary burn restrictions before lighting one.
