Park Elementary School celebrated Unity Day on Oct. 21, joining schools across the nation in celebrating kindness, respect and inclusion!

Students and staff wore orange to show their support for creating a safe and welcoming school community. Third- and fourth-grade students also shared messages of kindness through posters to remind us how small acts of respect and compassion can make a difference.

Unity Day is a reminder that everyone has a role in making sure each student feels safe, valued and included, every day. 🧡

Middleton High School engineering and technology teacher Mr. Justin Zander and his woodworking students are firing up the solar kiln!

Mr. Zander earned a grant last year from the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District Education Foundation to fund the solar kiln, and he worked with students last semester to build it. They finished the kiln this summer, and this week they loaded the first batch of lumber into the kiln to dry.

Each semester, 100 to 175 students enroll in woodworking classes at Middleton High School. Having the kiln allows students to mill their own lumber from local trees, which Mr. Zander estimates will reduce the school's spending on lumber from about $6,000 to $600 annually. It also means students will have more wood to do even more projects.

Learn more about Mr. Zander's work – https://loom.ly/KoTEGow – and we'll check back with him in a couple of months once this first load of lumber is dried and ready for students to use!

Second graders at Sunset Ridge Elementary School are making their voices heard!

Two students used their persuasive writing skills to share ideas for new menu items, including a nacho bar, with MCPASD Food and Nutrition Services Supervisor David Montag. Mr. Montag worked with them to decide which menu items to phase out and to coordinate trial runs for new menu items.

The students helped survey their classmates for feedback and worked with teachers on a school-wide voting event. Their work is a wonderful example of A Cardinal's Journey foundations of Communication and Collaboration in action!

Middleton High School's Center for Advanced Professional Studies (CAPS) program is now known as SOAR!

The profession-based learning program for juniors and seniors recently underwent a student-led rebrand to help differentiate itself from additional MHS programs that had similar acronyms. The rebrand, including the new name and logo, will help emphasize SOAR's strengths.
