Most chimney fires start with a build-up of creosote, the tarry substance left behind as smoke rises from a fireplace or wood stove. Cracks in the masonry can allow embers to escape and ignite the structure. Having your chimney and flue inspected and cleaned each year can reduce this risk. Firefighter Zarella recently visited the Howe-Manning School, interacting with more than 400 students during a public education program focused on lithium-ion battery safety, smoke detectors, and carbon monoxide detectors! 🔋🚒

The visit helped students learn about these important fire and life safety topics and encouraged them to share what they learned with their families.

Public education takes preparation, too! The accompanying photos show educational materials being assembled at the fire station in support of our outreach efforts.

Thank you to Firefighter Zarella and the Howe-Manning School staff for helping us share fire safety education with so many students!

October is National Fire Prevention Month. The Middleton Fire Department encourages every household to create and practice a home fire escape plan.

Use the home safety escape plan photo included with this post to identify two ways out of each room, choose an outdoor meeting place, and make sure everyone knows what to do. Practice together, including at night.

If a fire occurs, get outside, stay outside, and call 911. A practiced plan can make all the difference when seconds count.
