Fort Morris Historic Site Fort Morris Historic Site preserves one of Georgia's most important Revolutionary War landmarks. Visitors may borrow binoculars and a field guide to go birding.

Explore the earthworks, museum, and scenic grounds where patriots made their famous stand and declared "Come and Take It!" Located on the scenic Medway River. When the Continental Congress convened in 1776, the delegates recognized the importance of a fort to protect their growing seaport from the British. Soon afterwards, a low bluff on the Medway River at Sunbury was fortified and garrisoned by 200 patriots. When the British demanded the fort’s surrender on November 25th, 1778, the defiant Col. John McIntosh replied, “Come and take it!” The British refused and withdrew back to Florida. Forty-five days later, they returned with a superior force, and on January 9th, 1779, Fort Morris fell after a short but heavy bombardment. Under the name of Fort Defiance, this bulwark was once again used against the British during the War of 1812, and Sunbury's harbor was guarded by armed barges. Today, visitors can stand within the earthwork remains and view scenic Saint Catherines Sound. A museum and film describe the colonial port of Sunbury and the site’s history. Downy woodpeckers, pileated woodpeckers, goldfinches, wood storks, painted buntings, great egrets and many other coastal species can be seen. Museum Hours: Friday-Sunday / 9AM-5PM

Last week, Fort Morris Historic Site was awarded the Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites - Georgia DNR divisions Cultural Resource Enhancement Award for the ongoing site improvement and restoration project.

This project has included removing numerous trees from the fort interior and earth works, placing replica cannons in the fort, installing a new flag pole, installing new museum lighting, and the design (will be here soon) of new interpretive panels.

This project has been made possible by so many folks! We would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the citizens of Liberty County and our site visitors for their donations. We also want to thank our Friends Group, and the state for their assistance with funding the project.

A very special thanks to Mr. Tom Hand and Americana Corner for their generous donations that have helped us turn this dream of a project into reality!

The 37th Annual Georgia National Fair has started with a boom! This year’s theme is America 250: Georgia Grown, and we were there for it with a stellar cannon crew to officially start the festivities with a cannon firing. Governor Brian Kemp and the First Lady were there to kick off the celebration. The fun runs at the Georgia National Fairgrounds & Agricenter from now through October 18. We will be back on the 18th for the closing ceremony as well!
